i'm hoping they know something and are getting ready for AMD to compete directly with the 1080 and 1080ti cards.

but am curious to see some reviews and benchmarks of this new Titan Xp to see how it performs. both in gaming and other tasks. has the specs to be a beast for sure.

am i the only one who wasn't expecting this "Titan XP" announcement?

Now, related to AMD. I will second what Math Geek says. Will be this the moment for AMD to have a powerfull card to compite head to head against the GTX 1080-GTX 1080Ti? Hope the winner will be the costumer.

The only real 'overshadowing' is a $1200 price tag vs $700(retail)...

I guess what I meant is I assumed the 1080ti would be the top card for a lot longer. I was definitely not expecting a fast card for some time yet. I'm waiting to see the right 1080ti for me and now I already have another option to consider.

it will be nvidia top "true" gaming card until volta arrive. no doubt titan performance is very good for games but nvidia was very clear what they intend to do with their titan series. nvidia did not even send any sample to be reviewed (same with last year titan). because what most tech review out there did with titan is only measuring it's gaming performance. only few sites like anandtech interested in benching the compute performance of titan.

I don't think it really has any bearing on AMDs Vega. It's just business as usual in terms of Nvidia's product stack and pricing structure. They just needed somewhere to sell their good GP102 chips, at a significant profit. If anything, it means that they are not all that concerned about Vega. Nvidia has all their cards on the table and didn't do anything outside of the norm. If they were worried about Vega, they would have held off on this release and/or shaken up the pricing structure. At this point, for Nvidia it's on to Volta (and/or the Pascal refresh) without looking back at AMD trying to play catch up.

I side with 17seconds on his take. I don't think nVidia feels pressured at all now. Maybe when Vega becomes a real thing then they might feel a threat.

This smells more to "unsold Quatros" or "validation failed" ones. They still make a good profit I guess.

I used to think nVidia would do the same as before, but Vega has been pretty late to the game. It's been 10 months after the RX480? (Yes it has!) So Vega needs to be truly amazing to ruffle nVidia's feathers now. They've had such a stupidly big advantage so far, they'll just drop whatever comes after Pascal right on top of Vega.

Cheers!

One advantage I do see for Nvidia is that at best, I keep reading that AMD is supposedly going to be able to compete with 1080's and 1080ti's. That's yet to even be seen, but if they are, now Nvidia still has the new Titan, so the best AMD can come out swinging with is competing with Nvidia's second and third best cards.

but at $1200 it is not exactly in the same sentence as the other cards.

that's like comparing a VW and a Lexus and giving the win to VW because they also own the Bugatti Veyron. it misses the point of comparison completely. if AMD competes with the 1080 and 1080ti at a lower price point which is what i am expecting, coming in and saying "oh yah but for $1200 you can get better", is really not a valid comparison at all.

good enough for fanboys to convince themselves they "won" but meaningless in the price/performance ratio we use to decide what card gets the nod and where. It's a marketing ploy that does not really work on people who are willing to actually stop and think for a second.

Based on the specs of the new Titan Xp it will not be much faster than the 1080 ti. My guess based on the specs the Titan Xp will only be 5%-10% faster than the 1080 ti. They're basically in the same league when it comes to performance...

I'm pretty sure AMD Vega is aiming to use HBM2 memory. Hence the delay, but that also means a cheap card at the high end will be difficult to pull off.

The expensive memory will make them want to set a higher ~$700 price point, but Nvidia has already set the market in that range. The pressure is on AMD to beat or match the GTX 1080 Ti, or trim their profit margins with a lower price. Hard to imagine that they will be able to double their performance over the previous generation, which is what they need to get into GTX 1080 Ti territory.

the main problem is the cost with HBM. if you aware right now both AMD and nvidia have their own way dealing with this. adding more capacity with HBM is not simple hence HBM with more VRAM capacity can be very expensive due to HBM complexity. because high capacity HBM is very expensive AMD develop HBCC to deal with the issue "not enough VRAM".

one of the main advantage of HBM is they consume much less power than GDDR5 module. but lucky for nvidia their architecture is very power efficient. so they still can get away even using more power consuming GDDR5. but the issue with GDDR5 probably bandwidth. so nvidia for their part making their architecture to be very efficient in using available bandwidth. i think with 1080ti announcement nvidia mentioned that the effective bandwidth for GTX1080ti is around 1200Gb/s.

Well, titan is also the second biggest moon in the solar system. So either use the second biggest planet instead: Gtx Saturn( ideally make a partnership with Sega and get an exclusive sonic game, then it can be gtx Sega Saturn), the second biggest body: Gtx Jupiter, or maybe the biggest moon: gtx Ganymede, although gtx Callisto is a much cooler name.

If they mean titan as in titanium, the next element in line is vanadium, so maybe gtx Vanad, while the next heavyer version of titanium is zirconium, so gtx zirco.

If they just mean big, alternative giant races from mythology would give gtx jotun or gtx giant.

If they mean the titanic, the sister ships would give gtx Olymp or gtx Britain or possibly gtx Brittany.

Many nice possibilities.

Or they could add colors, like they did with the titan black. Titan pink and titan teal would be my future favorite cards

I don't think you're looking far enough back. It's named for the Titan of Greek mythology. Same as the moon. 😉

I realize that ( therefore gtx giant, as in the gigantes of Greek mythology), but they never officially confirmed where the name is from. They like using titanium edition, which is from the element, and they can always redefine the origin as they wish.

But if you want Greek, what about using the names of the titans? Gtx Rhea, Gtx Cronos, Gtx Oceanus or Gtx Phoebe? Or even better, the parents of the titans, Gtx Gaia and Gtx Uranus (very good for team chat trolling: "what GPU are you using?" "Uranus", followed by jolly laughter).

And why not use Christian mythology? Gtx Christ, with the nice feature that the generation after can legitimatly use the tag line "faster then Christ".

Because they're in business to make money, not go bankrupt by offending 3/4 of their potential buyers? :sarcastic:

I'm sorry I didn't want to offend, i just find the naming of graphics cards a bit ridiculous...

I wasn't offended. Just pointing out that many factors go into things like product names. Offending religious sensibilities whatever they may be is probably number one on the "things to avoid" list. :)

Yeah, it was kind of a joke proposal :) although I doubt 3/4 of NVIDIA customers are that easily offended 😉

I think NVIDIA has decided that titan has become a strongly defined product, and they don't want to change names in case the customer wouldn't understand a change. What makes no sense, is including the X in the name as well. Just use another letter.

Or they could just call it Larry or something and avoid the confusion. 😛

Anything would be better than Titan, Titan Black, Titan Z, titan X, Titan X, Titan Xp.

I vote they just ditch the titans all together. Make the x80 Ti the new Titan and make the Titan a Quadro card.

1080 Ti reviews all coming in now. I have seen two reviews say that the custom 1080 Ti is quieter than the 1080. However I have not heard anyone say that the 1080is anything but good and quiet. It does however make you drool over the 1080 Ti.

They are reporting the 1080 Ti is heavy though and some seeing a little sag. ..However going back to when I had my Asus Strix 1070, there was no sagging at first. After a year though, it did drop a fraction., like maybe 0.75cm. Nothing really. The 1080 Strix I have is straight even after a year though; I mean rock solid no sag straight.
