The first number is usually the phases for the GPU, whereas the second number is the phases for the memory and other minor stuff. That's at least how it works with motherboard, I'd assume GPUs are the same way. I think there are even more phases than what they show, realistically it's something like x+x+x+x, but the first number is primarily important. How good those phases are also plays a role, the number does not mean everything.
 


that makes sense and kind of what i was thinking anyway. so now how do i look at a pcb pic and count these phases?
 
The GTX 1070 has a 4+1 power phase:

Not precisely sure, but usually you'll notice 4 or so things that look identical and are in a patternal configuration.

those in the yellow box (chokes as they called them in the pic) is what i was thinking of that i could count.

@17 seconds, i know how many phases many of the cards have, i can read it n the specs and pr stuff for the card. my concern is for cards that don't list it anywhere. as i noted above, specifically this is the pcb of the zotac amp cards. they don't list the phases anywhere nor has it been noted by a reviewer. the pic is all i can find to workoff of.

i want to count the phases from this pic so i can update the cards specs. that's what i am asking about. if i use the chokes (in yellow on the pic turkey showed) to count, then it's nice and easy. it's what i was thinking but wanted to be sure that's actually what i am supposed to be counting :) would be 10 + 2 (if those 3 off to the right of the pcb count). that's a lot of phases but the ftw card has 14+3 so i guess it's not too ridiculous of a number for a card. looking for someone in the know to throw me a bone and explain how to count them.
 
thanks for the try. i'll keep looking into it. i'm sure somewhere out there is an explanation that will get me to the answer :) i'm looking at reviews and their pics and those chokes seem to match up to the reported number of phases, but i do want to be sure before spouting off info i don't know is right.

thanks again. i'll get there eventually. not most important thing just a bit of ocd on my part to not have incomplete specs.

I would like to buy a video card with 8GB memory and my problem with the RX480 it has not got PhysX!
So, I have to buy some NVIDIA card!

 
Not sure if this is the right thread to ask, but I'm looking to upgrade from my EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 3.0 to a 1080 and wanted to know which 1080 is the best. Money is not an issue, but when I buy my card I want to know that that I bought the best card available especially since SLI and Overclocking are things I might do with them, but overall I just need them to be powerful and fast.

Edit: Forgot to mention, my CPU is an i7-4790k. Will this be enough or should I start looking for the next big CPU for this to all work properly.
 
this is the right thread :)

so far not a single 1080 has been able to outperform the others. they all hit the same speeds at the same performance levels. really you're picking one that has the right look and price for you. perhaps an extra or 2 thrown in makes the difference. free game or something. you can look at some of the reviews from page 1 of this thread to get an idea but literally every card was the same 5-10 fps better than the FE and ran cool and quiet.
 


I am partial to EVGA, but I would wait for the second round of 1080s to come. As has been mentioned many times on the Pascal discussions, the first releases of a new GPU almost always have issues and need bugs to be worked out. In my case, I waited on the second round for 970s and got EVGA SSC ACX 2.0+ GPUs for SLI. It was a much better card than the original ACX superclocked variants.

And your CPU is fine. These days, especially at higher resolution and quality settings, CPU speed is not as important as GPU power. I have proven that running my 4690K overclocked to 4.7GHz and stock at 3.5GHz (both on all four cores) with benchmarks.

 
speaking of evga did anyone else notice that they released a ftw card with stock clock speeds? same price as ssc but you get the dual bios and the double power phases of the ftw card. then oc it yourself. i posted it to the main list but did not mention it here i don't think
