@turkey3_scratch My understanding from all the rumors is that the 1080 Ti will have a 225 watt TDP, as opposed to the 980 Ti's 250 watt TDP. I know that's a measure of heat and not power consumption, but I sincerely hope that rumor is true. It would be nice to have consumption go down, even if just by 25 watts.

Currently the GTX 1080 has higher power requirements than the GTX 980, so we will see. It seems like Nvidia went for more performance this time around rather than raw efficiency. From my totally non-biased opinion, I think Polaris will have lower power requirements than Pascal by a good margin.

there is a reason they focused on power usage based off the titan x and not the card it is supposed to replace :)

the extra performance is nice the high clock speeds seem to imply more of a brute force approach rather than a more elegant approach. per watt performance still looks good though so far.

AMD is going to price their same-performing cards the same price as Nvidia. And they'll probably require less power at that same price and same performance.

Cards are always priced competitively based on performance. You won't find a card being $50 less than another card and performing better - just doesn't happen.

and based on what we have been hearing for the last few years now, lower power consumption trumps all. 390 does better than a 970? yah but the 970 uses less power.

280 does a touch better than a 960? yah but the 960 uses little power. and so on and so on. so we'll just go with the whole "power consumption don't matter if it performs well" kind of idea like the last few years did not happen since it looks like amd might be on the lower power usage side this time 😀

i feel that performance is the most important thing but it is VERY obvious that i am in a very small minority on that topic.

The 1080 looks absolutely insane. All that power and nearly half the price of a Titan X... oh baby.

Come on AMD! Give us something to drool over, otherwise I might be purchasing my first Nvidia card.

My 980 Ti lets me max everything at 1440p. Since I just upgraded to both the 980 Ti and the 1440p screen last year I'll probably skip these and wait until the big card with HBM is released before I consider upgrading. Then maybe I'll look at adopting VR as well.

It'll be interesting to see Nvidia at the other side of that table. A common argument for Maxwell is "lower power" - and now if Polaris requires a lot less power than Pascal, it's going to be, "Oh, power doesn't matter at all, performance only does".

I sold my 980 Ti a few weeks back pending 10x series launch because i was getting 35-40fps ultra in games. e.g. the division.

I want to play games @ 60fps 4k Gsync ultra.

I was going to wait for 1080 ti however 2 x 1070's in SLI might be tempting and at $379 per card its actually viable. All speculation at this stage, i'll want to see some benchmarks first and see what custom PCB's / Aftermarket cooling solutions look like. Perhaps nvidia cracked the cooler (not literally) this time.

MERGED QUESTION
Question from msproject251 : "gtx 1080 founders edition?"

What is the difference between the nornal 1080 and the 1080 founders edition?

we are assuming that there will be a separate 1080 ti model but that is still rumor and that's all. later this year is all we can guess for this card and a new titan as well.

as for the founder edition they really did not specify but i believe it was said last night that it would have the better binned gpu's for better overclocking ability. they will cherry pick the best processors for the more expensive model. this is not unusual and expected.

@turkey, already seeing the back peddling on that issue and we don't even have any official specs for polaris. does make me laugh knowing it is coming from the nvidia fans and getting to watch it unfold. :)

MERGED QUESTION
Question from Avik Garain : "Pascal GTX 960"

I'm glad I decided to not buy the 980Ti and wait for this keynote before doing anything. I think I will definitely be getting the 1080. :)
Does anyone know what date to realistically expect a STRIX Version of the 1080 to release?

It took me a month after the 980 Ti was released to find one in stock. With the 1080 using GDDR5X and GDDR5X being in short supply it could be several months before the non reference cards are available at all and longer before they are readily available.

That long? Ah well. Maybe I ought to settle for a 980Ti Strix after all then? Price is sure to drop once 1080 hits the market I guess.

Because here is my one worry about the 1080 that I didn't think about at all when watching the presentation; It has 2560 CUDA cores. The 980Ti has 2816 cores (TITAN X has 3072 cores).
Does the lower number of CUDA cores mean that the 1080 will be a weaker card for CUDA rendering and acceleration in programs like Premiere Pro etc? :??:

You're comparing core counts of two different architectures, :heink:

^Please forgive my ignorance as I'm no expert on these things. So it shouldn't matter too much then?

Yes, I guess I'll need to be patient and wait. Still, it's a bit weird that they've decreased the number of CUDA cores from the 980Ti isn't it? :??:

So glad to be proven wrong by Nvidia in so many things when it came to Pascal. So glad they upped the core count and found a way to bring GDDR5X to the market in the first half of the year. GTX 1080 can noticeably beat Gtx 980 Ti and Titan X as well which is awesome. Hats off to Nvidia.

However we still don't know much about the 1070. It will easily beat the 980, but I dont think we can say for certain that it will beat Titan X and 980 Ti until we see the core count. My quick guess is the 1070 will have similar core count to the 980 and be about level in performance with 980 Ti and Titan X. I don't think it will noticeably beat them in real world gaming. Still incredibly exciting, and we still have the final specs reveal to look forward to.

I am very impressed by this series and happy to be surprised by Nvidia again.

I can't help wondering why people get so hung up on core counts, comparing core counts across different architectures has never really worked as a way of measuring performance.

No. The 1080 replaces the 980. The 980 Ti replacement will be late this year or early next year and will have HBM 2.
