I have a non-overclockable Xeon E3-1276v3, which is similar to i7 4790. GTX 1080 will likely need a overclocked i7 to maximize its potential as much as possible. I bought a GTX 1070FE and overclocked it on my system. I recommend to go with a GTX1070. If your budget is not an issue and you mostly play 1440P and above resolution, go with GTX 1080.

Since nVidia decided to settle rather quickly, I bet they ran numbers to make this call: continue to prove our point or just pay. I would imagine the amount of money they would have to pay to the original owners (I haven't read the fine print of the settlement, just intuition here) is way less than keep the class-action lawsuit going amassing attorney fees and all that.

Plus, if you still own a 970, $30 off it's replacement is nothing to sneeze at, right? 😛

As usual, I bet the marketing team from nVidia will spin it off as something positive, haha.

Cheers!

Looks like you've spun the spin already!

It's because they have a good experience with one GPU and a bad one with the other, so they automatically assume every GPU by company A is way better than company B. That, or they just hear it from other fanboys and start believing it. Or they buy into the marketing.

same psychology as rooting for a team or preferring a specific car brand or tv brand or whatever. people just like to think they "belong" with the group. they'll defend that group till the end no matter what. look at iphone v android. never EVER gonna see any intelligent conversation abut that. ford v chevy in the US is full of fanboys and nut jobs. and so on and so on. ps v xbox. so long as there is a competing product there will be fanboys who will latch on for whatever reason.

only thing i am a fanboy for is my NFL team of choice. God personally hates every single person on the planet that does not like the same team as me and has promised me all kinds of fun eternal suffering for each and every one of those who dare not like my team!!

but anyway, anyone seen any new pascal reviews i have not seen yet? looking for some from outside the US for the models that are only sold across the water from US.

?

Cheers! 😛

EDIT: Forgot to say... I like that design a lot... I don't know why.

thanks :) saw that one but did not add it since there is already a few for that card linked. was trying to decide if 2-3 was enough or if it was worth linking every single review ??? some cards like gaming x, strix and a couple others are sent to everyone so there are literally 30 reviews out there and some!!!

I finaly joined the green team wii, with a 1070.
And it came with some problems in the box...
Im having troubles with html5 web player.
For example, black screen always i load or close this web.

And sometimes with youtube videos...
I tried to switch off hardware acceleration, and it doesnt give me black screen anymore, but in exchange i gain a cool screen tearing in every web.
Fresh install and latest drivers.
Someone can help me.
Thanks.

It's quite frustrating to know that only those living in the US can receive the $30 from nvidia in regards to the gtx 970. I owned 2 in sli. I'm entitled to $60 but I live in Australia :'( lol

3 Months post launch and still no availability. Jesus.

I wish Amazon has 1060s already. I can't stand buying from Newegg when I have Prime, I like my 2 day shipping.

Also, just FYI, the folks on Jonnyguru consider the Strix cooler to be garbage http://www.jonnyguru.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13113&page=4

Well if they do their best at the PCB so much, why then **** up the cooler?

You've seen the Asus Strix cooler? If you're lucky three of the five heat pipes are actually useful. (GTX 1070 Stix and GTX 1080). If you're unlucky even the third heat pipe almost does nothing (RX 480).

With the Asus RX 480 Strix you pay a lot for the cooler, because it's just expensive. But because only two of the five heat pipes make good contact with the GPU the performance is underwhelming.

That asus cooler is PoS.

Someone told me Nvidia are doing it on purpose to price gouge. Then there is the story that the chips are troublesome to manufacture. Either way it's not a good sign of things to come.

The retailers are the ones who sell the items for the price they want, not Nvidia. Then you have third party sellers who even sell them for more money.

even so MSRP did not change. so nvidia did not benefit one bit from the price gauging at all. as for the manufacturing trouble it is to be expected that yield will be a bit problematic with the new transition. it is nothing new. we just got spoiled by 28nm maturity during 700 and 900 series.

@renz, I don't see why. You can either make FinFET or you can't. I think the issue is the die shrink, and the complexity of the chip.

Nvidia were also struggling with the 900 series because they wanted to make it in 20nm I think it was. They couldn't get the design running right though so dropped it....The Maxwell re-design was kept, but just produced at 28nm. If they have managed 20nm, our Maxwell's would have been intensely faster for the power, than Kepler. Given that they are anyway at 28nm.
