the founde's edition oc's to better so i would not call that highly oc'ed by any means. we're expecting a lot better with from the custom cards. if the card is limited in voltage for everyone, then it seems we won't be seeing anything better than that 2-2.1 ghz speeds we have already seen. sucks cause there seems to be a lot of potential in the gpu that is untapped.

would make the high end ftw, hof and others useless if they can't put extra voltage to the card and can only get clocks the same as even the cheap cards....

makes me wonder why evga and others bothered with 2 x 8 pin power if they won't even need the extra 6 pin worth of power due to limitations.leaves me hope that these are only the first cards and a lot better is coming with the high end custom cards.
 
I currently have a MSI GTX 980 and was wondering what I should do, a 1080 will be out of my price range so was going to get a second hand 980 ( going for around £240). Or should I wait for the 1070. Will the 1070 get better performance over 980 sli?

the couple benchmarks is saw for 980 sli (non ti models) had them right around the 1080. so if you're willing to work with sli, then a second 980 after prices drop would not be a bad way to go if you got the psu for it. a single 1070 was not even close to sli 980's but is a good bit faster than a single 980 by about 40%.

i'd say it depends on what resolution you want to use and what the prices are for 980's once 1070's are all over the place in stores.
 


I have a 1440p monitor and a evga G2 750 psu, I have seen some.
 


2.1 Ghz most likely the best we can see with any 1080 even counting board partner custom design. the only way to go higher probably by using modded BIOS so more voltage can be applied to the gpu. but of course using modded BIOS will void the warranty. hardocp have some story on 1080FE running at 2.1Ghz during the unveil of 1080/1070:

I love how the awe over a 2+Ghz card has been replaced by disappointment that it won't overclock much further than that in just a few weeks. :lol:
 


I'm sure the 1060 is already complete. It's their strategy to only have the high-end cards available from the start since they have better price/performance than the low-mid end Maxwell cards and are more compelling purchases.

It's pretty astonishing to think that the 1070 can beat the Titan X (and the 980 Ti).

I was wondering though. why the new chips are so much better. The architecture of the Maxwell chips was designed differently compared to Kepler and Fermi. That made them perform much faster and use less power.

The Pascal chips are smaller nano-metre transistors (gates) which always means less power needed. They are FINfet whereas previous cards were made using standard MOSFET.

A quick google about FINfet tells me the transistors:

require a much lower source voltage, thus can run cooler and use less power.
are much more efficient in terms of performance, meaning they operate faster.

Very exciting stuff for graphics cards.
 
TBH im ridiculously hyped for the lower end pascal cards because it seems 2k and 4k are becoming more of a priority, personally I'm absolutely fine with 1920/1080 or even lower for the next few years. I'm much more interested in higher refresh rate. I think this is the upgrade ive been waiting for, I've been cruising pretty decently with this $200 750ti but i was reluctant to upgrade to a 900GPU because they seemed a bit over priced in australia.

Good news for everyone, as we won't need to buy new cases.

I have so got that Asus Strix on my mind. Silly really because I don't need it yet, coz I have the Strix 980. I am just excited by the hype, and damn glad it fits.

I would like to max Witcher 3 though at 1440p and the 980 won't hold 60 fps doing that. Plus they say Doom won't quite max at 1400p and hold 60fps. I think I am going to have to figure out how to OC my card a bit.

I'd REALLY like to see indepth benchmarks for the 1080/1070 of 4k resolutions at SOMETHING OTHER THAN ULTRA PRESETS!

Most 4k early adopters (they still are and likely will be for another 4 years) don't use the highest settings, as they really don't need a lot of those processing heavy settings like AA because the resolution is higher and there's less to smooth out.

And if a $380 card can do 4k at the right mix of settings and stay above 50fps, I'd say 4k on a single card is now a totally realistic goal.
 


I don't remember which review it was but it said somewhere that dropping AA to x2 brought BF4 average FPS from 41 to 62 or so, with the 1070 at 4k. So massive gains for a little tweak.
 
i recall something like that as well. might have been the guru3d review but i could be wrong. i read a ton of reviews in a very short time.....

i don't get as hung up on ultra settings nor super high fps anyway. so 50 fps at mid settings is a total win in my book. and the 1070 should easily be able to provide that at 4k. for everyone else, there is always gonna be a $1000 card so you can brag about your e-penis and feel like a man for a while........
 
2 part question: I have 2 980's in SLI running a 1440P monitor. That's obviously plenty of graphical horsepower to push that resolution on ultra everything with almost nothing going below 60fps.

It's not the raw graphical power that's getting me, it's the sometimes issues I run into with SLI. It's not much, but it's still there and I can notice it on some games. However, it's not enough for me to be willing to take a loss on a new card, unless it's a serious upgrade. So, since the reference 1080 gets in the neighborhood of 90-95% of 2 980's would it be better to go that route for a single card solution with one of the factory OC from MSI, etc., or wait for the ti?

OR with the new HB sli bridges would 2 1070's be the better cost/performance option with the premise of improved SLI scalability and smoother gameplay?
