Ok, building a new machine soon...

And this time, I'm pretty much going all out. I've got the money to do it, so, I figured I'd treat myself to a powerhouse of a system. I've been going back and forth on specs, but, I think I've finally decided on the final specs. I'm not making this thread to brag, I just want to know if you guys would do anything different.

CPU:--AMD Athlon64 3400+ (I run a p4 right now, and was planning on buying a 3.2c, but, can't argue with the benchmarks and reviews. Never thought I'd switch to AMD, but, alas.)

MOBO:--ASUS A8V Deluxe VIA K8T800. I'm new to AMD mobos, so, at first glance this one looked best.

RAM:--2gb of GEIL PC 3200 (4x512)

Videocard:--MSI ATI Radeon x800 pro.

PSU:--Thermaltake Silent purepower 480watt.

HDD:--2 200gb Seagate Barracuda (SATA).

Sound card:--Soundblaster Audigy2 ZS Platinum.

And I'll be going with a Lian-Li PC-75 Aluminum case. And for cooling, I'm gonna put together a kit from Danger Den.

So, is there anything I should add/change/remove? I'm new to AMD and other mobos. I've always used an Intel chip with an Intel board, so, I have limited knowledge of other setups.

Get the "Newcastle" 3400+ instead of "Clawhammer" 3400+. Newcastle is faster due to higher clockspeed.

Buy a mobo based on nForce3 250 chipset (MSI K8N Neo Platinum for example)

Alright, I just checked out the board you suggested, looks a lot better.

But, as for the CPU, according to New Egg, they've got the same clock speed.

pci express chipsets are on the way now, if you spend a bomb on your comp you might be a bit pissed when its outdated within months.

i'm not one to advocate "waiting" for new technology, but it will literally be weeks before you can get a pci express motherboard and by then a 90nm cpu and of course a pci-e graphics card.

Athlon64s doesn't gain much performance from extra L2 cache. Extra 200 MHz has more impact on performance compared to extra 512k L2 cache

I agree with Maximumgoat i think you should wait a couple more weeks and see what new tech comes out.

cant argue with benchmarks??? From your specs i gather that it's gonna be a gaming rig but have you read the article on the new socket 775 cpus with unlockable multiplier on asus mobos. Together with that dangerden watercooling i think an intel with 1200 fsb on 4 will kick that 3400+ s ass when you get it to say 2,5 ~ 2,6 ghz (I THINK)

And if you are going all out take a 3500+ and socket 939 so you have an upgradepath that worth something. And as others have mentioned next moth you have really nice mobos with PCIX for your AMD which is also the way to go if you ever want to change say your cpu or graphix card...

I'll be buying these parts over the next couple weeks, so, I probably could wait for the new boards to come out.

Do you uprade parts as time progresses? If you don't and just splurge on a new machine every 2 or 3 years than who cares. Buy the 3400+ and a current mobo with an AGP card. But if you have an upgrade cycle then I would wait for PCI-E.

I upgrade when I have the money. I just landed a new job that will give me money to completely build a new system. I'll be buying a couple parts every week until it's built.

I'll probably order case and water cooling setup first, so I can test the water cooling kit in the case.

I'll probably order CPU and mobo last, so prices will have a chance to drop, and hopefully the new PCIe boards for AMD will be out.

Socket 939. If I don't get the MSI board with the nforce3 chipset, I'll wait til the PCIe boards come out.

No 3400 for 939. You can get 2800, 3000, 3500, 3800, or FX.
Since you will be waiting, a 3200 is slated for release by oct 15. That might be a good choice. The 3500 is just too expensive.
