Currently I have a Tbird 1.2@1.33 on Asus A7V133 mobo with 256 ram, 30 gig hd, 16x dvdrom and... a 2x2x6 HP 7200+ writer. Before the writer was installed in my old p200 mmx. It was burning perfectly, not a single coaster. However, I installed it into my new PC, and it gives me nothing but either coasters or screwed up disks, u know it finishes burning and when I try to use a cd, there is a CRC error somewhere on it 🙁

btw, I dual boot win98 SE and Win2k SP2
Now I don't understand the problem, I use EZCD 5 on my win98 and it burned 2 coasters in a row ( I use "Mitsumi" brand disks) I didn't try CDRwin, but I tried Nero on Win2k and it finished first couple of cd's just fine, but I tried yesterday and got 2 more coasters 🙁 Also I understand that win2k doesn't have ASPI layer support? Does it somehow affect burning?

Is my cd writer simply dying??

Please help, Thanks in Advance

There's probably 100 things that can screw a cd. Win2k doesn't have an aspi layer by default. You can download them; adeptec has one, and there's another company that has one out too. I don't use them at all, though I have both on disk.
All the common cd burning soft. use the 'internal' calls for win2k, so there's no need for an aspi layer if you upgrade to one of the latest versions. Cdrwin 4.0, Nero 5.5+, ezcd 4.03+. Anyway, I can't imagine using a 2x cdr, but I know with the faster 12x10x32+ drives (plextor), media makes a HUGE difference. I can't burn with Memorex Platnium 4x cdrw or Verbatium 4x, but I can with TDK 4x. I'm still not convinced it's the physics or the material of the system; marketing ploys can be highly profitable. Anyway, end result is I had to mail order some Ricoh 10x cdrw because my tiny town carries them not.

It's possible your laser is losing power. I've got 2 USB 4x4x6 drives (more or less), and the hp 8200e is right next to worthless. I returned it twice, and got new drives both times under warranty. I've not tried any cdr in the past 6 months because I burned about 8 coasters trying to get it to work, which it did one time at 2x. But I've had no real problems (save 1: operator error) with the sony.

You might think about upgrading to a faster drive. I've seen 16x10x40 (generic) at Wally World for under $120. They aren't the top of the line models, but if you're not worried about 'overburning' or 'burn-proof', it's a decent way to go.

You didn't mention you configuration. An HP CDwriter does not like being on the same cable as a hard drive. If this is your setup, try having the cdwriter and dvdrom on the secondary ide.

I wonder...what is the speed of gravity?

Thanks for an extensive explanation Ejsmith2, I didn't see cdrwin 4.0 yet, however I have ezcd 5.0 and I didn't try it under win2k, it did give me troubles under 98.

P.S. My writer is on the secondary channel with my dvdrom, my hd however is on promise ultra100 controller
