I'd appreciate any feedback you guys have regarding my new machine. Here are the proposed specs. Everything is up for reconsideration.

CPU: Athlon XP 2700+
MB: Abit NF7-S
RAM: Corsair XMS PC3200 512meg
VIDEO: Radeon 9800 Pro (Asus)
HD: Seagate Barracuda SATA 160gig
DVDR: LiteOn LDW 811S
CASE: Antec 1080+AMG

Comments are appreciated. The budget is a little bit flexible, but I'd like to keep it close. If there's something a lot better for not a lot more cash, let me know. Also, if I'm wasting money on something expensive and crappy, let me know! :)

Buy a Mobile XP2500+ and overclock it instead - will save a little cash.

Or if you're uncomfortable with Overclocking, you may as well buy PC2700 RAM instead of 3200.

Sapphire have a 'Lite-Retail' 128Mb Radeon 9800Pro which you may find is cheaper than the one you have in mind, with the only difference being the software bundle (i.e. you don't get one with the Sapphire). if you're not worried about what games the card comes with you could get that instead (It's the one I bought myself)

Aside from that, good parts I'd say.

I assume your budget denies you the A64 route?

Thanks for the comments. I'll look into the saphire card. I don't care what games it comes with, so thanks for the tip. :) I seriously considered the A64. But even the 2800+ and an abit kv8-max3 is almost twice the price. While I could handle this budget wise, I'm just not sure the performance is worth the extra cash.

I'm not sure how you get to twice the price, on pricewatch you can get a A64 2800+ for $169 and a decent A64 board shouldnt cost more than $100. With those prices and especially for gaming, it definately would be worth it. You'll also get a better upgrade path, C&Q and 64 bit for free.

Well, you guys made me rethink the XP. I bit the bullet and got a A64 3200+ and an Abit KV8-Pro. I saved a good chunk on the sapphire card, so I only ended up going a little over $100 over budget. Thanks for the help!

Half of that stuff is from before 1995.

I recommend LiteOn SOHW-812S instead of LDW-811S
