I am going to use my computer for a good bit of games and for a good bit of work. I was leaning toward opteron cause it can overclock to 2.6(I am just going to 2.4) on air cooling. It also has 1MBx2 cache. Which should I choose?

The opteron will probably require less voltage for the same clock, therefore less heat to deal with (not that the 3800+ is 'hot' anyway). For that reason I'd go for the opteron if there isn't a huge price difference. (well, and the fact I'd not settle for 2.4Ghz )

I went with the opteron 165 and it's awesome. I can game, watch a movie, burn a CD and surf at the same time. And that's only with a Gig of RAM. I did build an X2 3800 machine and it was pretty good. I chose opty because I overclocked it and it runs very cool.

if you want to OC and still have some headroom and are willing to pay the extra the 165 is your best bet.

as it says in my sig i have an 3800+ OC'd to 2.4 on the stock cooler, underload during Adobe Premiere, it never breaks the 42C barrier, but i'm also running a homebuilt open case designed case, so my ambient temp. is the air in my room. But nonetheless, if i had a 4400+ cooler i could easily hit 2.6ghz or more with the 3800+.

just my 2cents

Opteron, maybe a dual proc board that you could add another processor to later.

What do you think about the single core Opteron, namely the 144?

id go for the opteron becuase of the overclocking and the cache
