I am trying to figure out how to change or activate the fan speed on an older Acer Aspire 3100. I've tried a few fan control utilities and cleaned out the vents and fan to no avail. I've also flashed the BIOS to the latest version and used slim drivers to update all my drivers. Here is what the machine does. When initially powered on, the fan spins up nicely until it gets to the Windows XP load screen where it shuts off never to come back on again. Ever, until powered off completely and restarted- then it only gets to the XP screen and shuts off again. My question. I am not able to make adjustments in BIOS as there are no provisions. As a matter of fact, there isn't even an advanced tab. Is this a setting I can access through the command prompt? Really frustrated I can't find a solution other than having a big fan blowing air into the laptop to keep it from shutting off from overheat. Any help or advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

Doe you BIOS have a PC-Health section? This is usually where you can set your turn on temps.

As for your fan not coming after windows starts, have you tried stress testing your system to see if the fan will come on like running Prime95?

No PC health section in BIOS. No advanced section either. Yes, I've tried stress testing. The fan never comes on and the computer shuts itself off. CPU temp rises over 100 degree Celcius. It's like the fan does it's self test initially but is turned off somewhere.

Yep, I've cleaned the fan and the vent. Fan spins smoothly and is not binding at all. Like I said, when initially powered on, the fan spins up very nicely but completely shuts off when it reaches the Windows XP screen. Why it doesn't stay on, I have no clue. It's almost like it is turned off somewhere but I have no idea how to access the settings. I think I might have to resort to using the Phoenix BIOS Editor Pro as all the fan utilities I have tried don't work and can't even seem to recognize the fan inside. Hopefully that sheds some light. It will run until the core gets too hot and the machine shuts itself off. I can't under any circumstances, get the fan to kick in under load at all. Is this possibly a bad fan maybe or some kind of motherboard thermostat not working correctly. I have updatede all the drivers... I think.

Interesting development. The battery in this laptop is dead. Just for curiosity, I removed the battery and just ran it with the AC cord. The fan works properly now without the dead battery in place. Perhaps a good battery is needed for the fan to run properly- like completing a circuit? Weird. Anyone else had this happen?

I have the same problem when I insert the battery the fan is malfunctioning. Especially when the battery is inserted speed fan displays the parameter Temp1 = 0C and core always higher, removing the battery the two temperatures are displayed correctly.
Does anyone know why?
