I have just tried to upgrade by adding a K6/500meg to my ASUS P5A. I'm "almost" certain that I have all the jumpers in the correct place but I'm getting an 'indicated' speed of 400Meg.

I have Win95 (with the AMD upgrade)
Bus frequency of 100Mhz
CPU external clock of 5.0x

Anybody with thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

AlanC

Just downloaded and ran the suggested utility - NEAT! Strangely though, it comes up with 501 MHz! Additional info it gives is:
Speed: 501MHz
L1 Data Cache: 32kB
L1 Inst Cache: 32kB
L2 Cache: Not reported
Family.Model.Step: 5.8.12
MMX: Yes
3DNOW!: Yes

Any comments?

Thanks, AlanC

Flash your BIOS dude... usually when that happens the BIOS doesn't recognize that it's a 500. The CPU <is> running at 500mhz, but the bios thinks it's 400 or whatever. Get the latest BIOS version for that board... i've had that problem b4. It's not big deal... the CPU is running at 500- it's up to you if you want it to say that.

Thanks guys,

Had a idea that that might be the problem - nice for something to be confirmed.
Next problem is to work out how to upgrade BIOS! I know many of you have done it quite regular, but this is my first time - as the actress said to the computer salesman.
