I recently reinstalled Mame on my old computer - Pacmania now runs very
slowly on it (Celeron 500, 256mb ram, 16mb Geforce card, Win98se) - it never
used to. I read something recently about new versions of Mame making certain
games slower, is this true? Can't believe Pacmania doesnt run on this
machine anymore. Can anyone throw some light on this?

Look in the pull down menus under preferences (or is it options?) and
select "Disable Validity Checks". HTH

Validity checks wouldn't have anything to do with how fast it runs. Only
how fast it starts.

Personally, I'd say Linux over DOS anymore. I'd also hope up that celly a
bit, but thats just me. I like having my hardware a bit more than stock

Points taken but fact is, it used to work fine on this computer. There's
nothing in the background, plenty of hard disk space, hdd has been defragged
etc. I can only assume that the newer versions of Mame are not as well
optimised as before ?

Just a suggestion but, if you want to play pacmania on your hardware, why
not play it on the older version that runs fine and avoid using the newer
versions until you upgrade your hardware =)

I had to chuckle over that last sentence. MAME has /never/ been
optimized. Their philosophy has always been 'Make it run /perfectly/
first, /then/ make it run fast, and we should have time to do /that/
sometime in the decades following after they stop making arcade games.'
(or something like that)

If you want a (somewhat) optimized version, try fastMAME. (

Perhaps something in the driver changed to make the emulation cleaner.
