Partitioning ?

I am working at partitioning my 32gb hard drive, also an external 220gb for
media storage. The original came factory with two c and d partitions. Can
anyone help me understand the reason for formatting to a primary or logical
partition. Why use a logical over a primary? Thanks for any info....
