Hi, I'm about to start my first computer build I was confused about the wattage. How much wattage do I need and if I go over the amount I need will it be bad for my computer?

depend on how much your computer use.

It would shut down or will not boot up at all

If you have too much wattage, it would do nothing.

But you do want to have a good quality power supply unit.

Yeah I was thinking 750 watts - 1050 Watts for my gaming build

Well, its mainly dependent on the quality of the power supply. A good 550W power supply is decent enough for any computer with one graphics card, but something of low quality 550W is not going to be able to power that.
