Hi you guys. I was wondering if my board can fully use a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB videcard? I onlyt have a stupid pci 8 x, but it fits pci 16x. My motherboard is kinda messedup lol. i got a gigabyte ga-m61sme series. I was just wondering how up i can go without buying a card that using more then pci 8x. Thanks.

The difference in performance between PCIe x16 and x8 is not significant.
Check that your power supply is adequate for the upgrade.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 System Requirements

450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)

Do not forget that his motherboard support PCI-E 1.0 x8 and not PCI-E 2.0 x8.

PCI-Express version 2.0 increases speeds to 32x which is well beyond what most computers can actually use. An important thing to note is that most video cards that are designed for 2.0 will NOT work in 1.0 slots. They will, however, work in 1.1 slots.

Ya you guys, i got a pci-e 2.0 8x. i guess thats pretty good then? and i only have a 400watt power supply. i wonder if i could still get a better card then i got. i got a redeon 4650 512mb.

Actually, the slot on that motherboard should be of the 1.1/1.0 variety. There will be a small performance penalty compared to using that 4850 in a 16x PCI-E 2.0 slot. If you are using a newer AMD CPU there is also a small performance penalty from the downgraded HT link, but it's very very small. Just thought I'd point it out anyway :D.
