im getting a free tower and im wondering how the performance would compare to my current tower

the one im getting

windows Vista home premium - OEM
Processor-Intel pentium D CPU 3.4ghz
Memory 4gb
32 bit operating system (will change to 7 64bit)
TV-Haupaulege Freeview card
Motherboard: DG965wh
Graphics card - Nividia Geforce 8800 GTS 640gb
CD/DVD RW
250gb hard drive [2 seperate]
700w Power

can this be overclocked and would it play call pf duty black ops

my current tower witch ive sold (awaiting the buyer to pick up)

amd athlon x2 50002.6ghz
m2-nfs
2gb ram
250gb hard drive
7300gs .


the Pentium d has a much better case and coolling then mine just dont want too be downgrading too much


i just want to play call of duty moderwarefare and black ops online at a 1024x768 with medium graphics ... how does the pentium hold ... please dont tell me to upgrade i reallli cant afford to .. thankyou
 
You might get away with it but at that low a resolution you are going to be processor bound. I believe the Pentium D at 3Ghz is roughly equal to a Core2Duo at about 1.5Ghz.

That Pentium D will not overclock much at all.
 



Both are dual core.
 
brett there both dual core but what im thinking is th extra 2gb ram and the better graphics would make up for processer diffrence ...
 
The graphics and RAM will help but there is a pretty large difference in those processors and as I said above at low resolutions you are much more processor dependant.

The best thing to do would have been to use the RAM and graphics from the free computer to boost the AMD computers performance. I guess that is out of the question though. Really the only way to know for sure if the new computer will perform as well as the old one is to try it.

As you already know both chips are from 2005-2006 and neither will be very good by today's standards.
 
Question: Are you even sure these PC's even SUPPORT Modern Warfare? Both are hopelessly obsolete by modern standards. I had to double check to make sure this wasn't a thread from 2005 or something...

Seriously, get an i3 based PC built around a 6670/6650 from HP or Dell for $399. It will blow those rigs out of the water.
 
What you should have done is take the RAM and GPU and put it in your current system because that Athlon 64 X2 would destroy that Pentium D even when OCed.

Example: My Core 2 Duo T8100 (2.1GHz 3MB L2) is much faster than my hackintosh with a 4.12GHz Pentium D!
 
i really cant afford a new pc untill after christmas . I have sold the athlon x2 5000 pc for 100quid . . . Im getting the pentium d tmaz as far as i know it should play modernware 2 . . If i up the resolution will that put more stress on nvidia 8800gts 640mb . . . Thats the only game i want to play .. . I no i probz wont play black ops or modernwarefare 3 as the cpu is not powerfull enough . . I will be making a cheap quad machine after chrimbo so as long as i can play a call of duty then that will be great untill i get new build.

Well if you have to stick with that Pentium D your going to want to overclock it. I would recommend getting either a Cooler master Hyper 212+/Evo if it's a 90nm smithfield core or a Hyper TX3 if it's a 65nm Presler core.

I was able to get to 4.12Ghz undervolted from 1.33v to 1.3v on my Pentium D 930 with a Hyper TX3 and I could probably go further.
 
i have the pentium d machine and believe it or not it is alot better at gaming then the athlon machine ... i can play eurotruck simulator on ultra settings at 1440x900 at 30+ fps...

the speccy is

pentium d 950 3.4ghz
4gb ram
8800 nvidia 640mb
dg965 and its got alaska evo heatsink ... its huge lol although the bios is reporting 65c .. i cant access tem,ps in windows as nothing reads them ..

i have repasted the cpu ... the heatsink has a space for another fan so im going to buy a fan and install a few more big fans in the case as the pentium d is flaming hot
 
65C for that CPU is not that bad actually, these CPUs can handle a lot of heat. I was able to run my 90nm P4 540J up to 80C overclocked before it would shutdown.

If you want a really good big heatsink then the Cooler Master Hyper 212+/EVO would be perfect for you.
 
it is a very hot cpu . . But the perfomance isnt as bad as people keep saying . . It runs games quite well at 1440x900. . Witch is high enuff for me . . . . And i have to admit that pc gaming and graphics on pc is noticbley better . . . I been playing modern warefare and the graphics luk alot better
 


It's a bit to late now, I think he said he already sold the AMD setup....

However his 8800 GTS does not get outperformed by the Intel HD 4000.
 


I have to agree, for your uses it's fine especially if it's free! I just think there are too many people on these forums with cash to burn and think others can spend big money on something.
 
yeah for my needs its perfect , the cpu is nowere near as bad as people say . . . The games i play can all be maxxed out at high resolution . . . . I dont think it will play every game but it can play quite alot . . .
 


I had a Core 2 Duo e4400 @2.00GHz before. My FX 4100 whoops it in almost everything. Anything past 2009 it failed miserably at. I got maybe 45 FPS playing Sims 3 with all EPs maxed out with 4GB DDR2 and a GT 430 on 720P, and my machine was certainly better than yours (And Sims 3 is extremely light). But for anything past 2009? No. Time to upgrade if you ask me.

its good that you got the pc for free but that pentium D is crappy. it may play the games for now at low settings but i doubt its gonna be able to play skyrim and other such titles.
since you sold off your old rig you may soon want to build a budget intel based gaming system that can play all games at high settings like mine
