It could be an mobo bios/firmware issue...you could try updating bios to see if it does anything....because it's not supposed to be this way...as you guys say it used to work okay...what if your north bridge/south bridge are freaking out...from too much stress...try clearing the CMOS then running everything at recommended/stock settings and test the stability with all the programs (prime 95, memtest, linx, 3DMark)
And go from there....if stable try overclocking a grain and so on...Idk what the problem is so just had some suggestions...hope you guys can get your systems up and running...

Hello all,

I read a bit through the thread and decided, not only because of this thread ofcourse, to get me a x2 550 for €77.

Tomorrow I will have all the parts and start building.

I'll let you know if I had any luck w!th the unlocking gods...

I wish you luck m8.

@ videl

You live in Cali, right?

EDIT: like my shiny new silver badge? I think ive got the first.

Very cool,Congrats!

Now onto a serious question. When evaluating your OC stability with say Prime95/blend test and you have failurs of the following nature, is there a set pattern to where you are out of whack?

1 core shuts down with error in first 5 minutes of testing
1 core shuts down after 6+ hours
2 cores have shut down after 6+ hours
BSOD during first 30 minutes
BSOD after 6+ hours

Smoke and flames would just mean your FUBR, and shouldn't be doing this, right 😉

I've had all but that last when I start getting above 3.5 with my X4 B50

After reading this post I have decided to put together my own machine:

GIGABYTE GA-MA770T

AMD Phenom II X2 555 Deneb 3.2GHz

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

Rosewill Wind Knight Gaming ATX Mid Tower

This will all be arriving in a couple of days.

I plan on using my Gigabyte GH-PDU21-SC G-Power Cooler Processor cooler from my last build.
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?hl=en&q=g+power+cooler&cid=10661717405464109427&sa=title#p

I have a 750gb Caviar Black and 650W Pc Power and Cooling Power Supply from my last build. I am also throwing in my HD4670 to hold me over until I can purchase better GPU.

Also as a note this will be my first overclock attempt 😀

I have a couple of questions:
1. Is unlocking and overclocking the X2 555 similar or close enough to the 550 in that I can use the information I have read in this thread? Looking around at other threads, I believe the answer is yes, but I wanted to confirm with the experts that are in this thread.

2. What can I reasonably expect to crank this little processor up to after I unlock it? 3.8-3.9Ghz with my current aftermarket cooler?

3. What is the next reasonable upgrade path for this setup? I believe it is obviously the GPU. After that should I wait a year and throw in a new processor? Striped SSD? What is my next weakest link in this setup after the GPU?

1. Yes. Many motherboards are now getting BIOS updates that allow you to unlock cores through the BIOS menu, so it's worth updating your BIOS once you get the board.

2. It does depend on whether or not your 3rd/4th cores are faulty and it should do a minimum of 3.8ghz with two cores running. Just watch your temps and make sure to never go past the max safe temp for long periods of time.

3. GPU is the next upgrade and for your processor, you shouldn't need to upgrade it if the games you're playing are running fine. I would wait maybe 2-3 years before going to a new processor. With SSDs, you won't see a significant difference in gaming, but you'll see quicker overall system performance (faster boot up time, application load up times, etc).

well guys I finally unlocked one myself! Wow!!! What a happy customer!!!! But I have a question: What are you guys getting on a windows experience score? benchmarks were much better unlocked but experience score stayed the same! hmmmmmm?! That would make me doudt the validity of the experience index score!

I can care less what the windows experience gives me =) , i go by what vantage/06/MaxxMem and other apps tell me....

Last I checked Win gave me a 7.4 (overall) and gave my drive a 5.5 =( , MS wants me to buy an SSD, funny...

yes me too! But my issue is what the score on the cpu is. As a 550 the score is a 6.9 and as a B50 it is still a 6.9! Minimum score on a QUAD for Win7 is a 7.1 hmmmm...... A 6.9 on a quad seems like its not really rating the performance but it gives a pre set rating instead!

Oh yeah by the way the score is determined by the lowest score you get.... So your score would be a 5.5. In this case the cpu was the lowest score giving it a 6.9 overall score as I did install a SSD in ths customers build. HDD score was 7.4

Correct 😉 , so that means I got a 5.5 (overall)... well MS can shove that rating up their arse!!!

Im not buying an SSD till they go down (and I mean DOWN) in price. My dual 640's in RAID0/single 1TB are plenty for my needs ATM.

The 555 does unlock in most cases.............. BUT it does not OC like the 550. The 550 is a BE (black edition) the 555 is not. AMD does not like higher base clocks very much, this makes it very hard to OC this chip since it has a locked multiplier. Just wait and see what comes out before trying to plan an upgrade path.

EDIT: sorry for the multi posts 😉

The x2 555 is a Black Edition, if you are looking at the pics on the Egg you will see so. Newegg just didnt bother with fixing the typo 😉

The x2 555BE is basically the 955 C3 with 2 locked cores..

The x2 550BE is basically the 955 C2 with 2 locked cores..

I have already seen the x4 B55 at over 4.2Ghz on Air, but since the 975 is around the corner I am not going to sweat it 😉 , specially since I might not be able to unlock 🙁

No SH##! Hmmm!! Actually I am quoting what we have in stock ..... oops! I had no Idea there was a BE version ................ I have been set straight! Lately I havent been keeping up with enough of the hardware .... I feel ashamed ;(

I deleted My BS above!

lol 😗 ...

hey dude!! what happen to the "DESK" ??? <<<---- sry but i wanted that to sound like i was using a high tone of voice...

Windows is probably still reading the CPU as a dual core CPU as the B50/B55 aren't "true" quad cores. Windows Index Experience is probably the worst/most entry benchmark you can use. I think it was built for consumers who don't know a lot about computers and they just see that a lower number means upgrading is the way to go, even if performance is already high enough. Congrats on the unlocking though!

Yeah what's up xtc28!?!?
what's up with the desk?
Idk but I get 6.5 cpu rating in win7 when x2 and a 7.4 when x4 @3.8
So don't just look at the base score look at the individual scores and
look at the cpu score...Lol I bet you knew that already...lol... 😛

he is on here on and off....

anyways here is a screen shot of my score :

I "defragged" the HDD and it game me .4 more

Greetings all!!

This thread kicks @$$!!

Haven't built a system in 10+ years. Building two this week. Both are fairly similar. Parts arrived yesterday and system 1 is up and running:

MA770T-UD3P mobo
Phenom II X2 550 BE (0950GPMW on processor - batch 950? )
Stock cooler for now
OCZ Gold 2x2
HAF 922

blah...blah...blah

Anyway, first system up and running Win7 64 bit.

Bios F5 came on board. Tried to flash to F6 but the first download I tried wouldn't run in 64-bit. Leaving F5 for now.

EC Firm -> hybrid
ACC -> Auto

CPU-Z now states

AMD Phenom II X4 B50 Processor

Not much time to play around any more today. Gotta head off to work where we still use Win2k - I can read these forums, but I can't post ?? Oh well, I should be working anyway :)

After System 2 is up and running - hopefully on quad core - I'll start tinkering with sys 1 and hopefully with y'alls help, we can get it screaming!!!

Should I just go ahead and order a good air cooler now? CPU paperwork says any cooler other than the factory cooler will negate the warranty.

Good job 😉 , welcome to the club...

HEY GUYS! Wassup?! To tell the truth the desk is kinda in a bit of limbo! A lack of funds has caused a hiatus for a while. Im ordering a couple of cases to attach to the sides of the desk ...... Inwin B2 cases at that. I have killed every board that was attached to the desk and my underglass monitor is dying every day. Exposed components may not be the best course of action here. I have cut and began to bend/form some 3/8 inch U/V blue acrylic to enclose the underside of the desk. I hate to admit it but the last idea looked cool but it all fried!!!!!!!! Next go around I am grounding the desk much better than before!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yup! it just doesnt change the score on this build.......... :??:
