It seems to vary on the workload... but overall I would give the Phenom II X4 955 the win over the Q9550 in this particular application.

Surprising, but at stock speeds the AMD 965 benches better than the Q9550.

Not surprising is the i5 750 beats the AMD 965, both at stock speeds:

Are you OC'ing? If so, I think Intel is the way to go either way. Since the DDR2/3 price differences are negligible and the CPUs are close, mobo's are close, try for the i5. Might be worth waiting until the AMD Phenom IIx6 comes out an benches too if you have time to wait.

If the i7s come into play, then the i7 860 is probably the best option for rendering. If you're using huge files, then the i7 920 has a slight benefit from the triple channel memory. The i7s should still beat the unreleased x6s.

Not sure if you're using a workstation card or not, but this is worth a read (intro and conclusion for sure) if you are using a gaming card:

If you can't afford even the entry level nvidia cards, look into soft moding the bios of a gaming card.

Trying to pull a fast one eh. :p

if you didn't include the core i7 920, the Phenom II x4 955 would be the choice. Although the 920 will be the better choice.
