Hello,

My mom has done an oopsie.. she clicked on a malicious link in her email send a fake bank email.
she has put in her credentials etc.. but i called card stop already so i think were safe on that part.
now they probably have downloaded a keylogger or something else malicious on her device no? (windows laptop)
I saw a .pst file in her downloads from outlook but dont know if thats malicious or not, and i also believe they cant be that blatant.
what do i do know, cause she really needs the files that are on her laptop so i cant just do a fresh win install.
what is the best bet to find and get rid of anything malicious?

I Agree with Rgd1101 I wouldn't even waste time on security programs as now-a-days a lot of things are polymorphic or so specially designed that they avoid detection.

Just nuke it from orbit after backing up data. But don't back up program configurations and program files. Just data.

As really nasty ones will interweave with .exe and program config files of things she uses.

Possible trouble with transferring/ copying stuff is risk of transplanting virus, is why i didn't suggest just simply backing up or connecting a clean drive doing so. I do agree full wipe would be best if backup wasn't necessary. Hopefully anti virus/malware software does the job.

Yup this is true, which is why its good to have back ups from months or years in the past. Of course then you risk transplanting ancient/old ones.

But such is the fun of the common Era of 12025. Gosh aren't we so un-advanced for being 10000 years since the first walled city??
