I've played 2003 a quite a bit and I've hosted games using the
dedicated server software that they release for it for free.

Is there a dedicated server that you can run from your own PC in 2004
as it was for 2003? I'm getting the impression that they only way to
do this now is to rent a server for this purpose.

>From others that played 2003 a lot and then went on to 2004. I've
noticed that the sound is just not right. The explosions and gunfire
effects are subdued compared to what I heard in 2003. I've tried the
other sounds configs like 3D Hardware, 3D Audio and safe mode but they
all have the same subdued sound effects. Any ideas as to why?

TIA

There is a free dedicated server for UT2004. Google it.

Can't help you with the sound problem. I went straight from UT99 to
UT2004, so I couldn't say if there's a difference between 2003 and
2004, although my gut feeling says there shouldn't be.

Yes. I can install it using "emerge ut2004-ded" on my Gentoo Linux
box.

Nope. Got some trouble with my web server. I've given up the FAQ
anyway, and nobody wanted to host and/or maintain it.
