Poor I7 CPU performance

Hello,

I'm having issues with my CPU performance as it seems to have massively decreased in how well it runs ever since I have installed some new ram (I made no BIOS changes) and I am unsure why.

There are no odd processes running that would consume it. (Only thing the PC is running is Chrome / Steam / Spotify and normal Vista 64 bit background processes) however it appears when I try and load a page in chrome (or any browser) or switch between tabs often etc my CPU useage increases to almost 40% which seems very unusual for an I7 920.

I ran MEMTEST on the ram and it has found no errors. To put it in perspective, when I loaded up Wargame European Escalation and had it autodetect my settings, it dropped them all from medium etc down to the lowest possible settings after increasing my ram from 3 to 12 gigs.

With Process Explorer open I notice nothing weird running, just things like Chrome (or IE or whatever I'm working with) causing my CPU usage to spike to 30-60%.

I do have an I7 920 and it is not overclocked.

I may not be able to offer any help but I do want to understand your problem. You say your CPU performance has "seem[ed] to have massively decreased in how well it runs". What do you mean by this? Have you tried any benchmarks to support this?

A CPU being utilized 40% is NOTHING. I don't care if it's an Athlon XP 3200+ or I7-3960X Extreme Edition, if you're not utilizing 95% or more your're fine.

What, exactly, makes you feel you have a massive decrease in your performance?

auto detect settings don't always work.

Try running any benchmark. Even Window experience index will do and see your old and new scores.

I realize the autodetect settings do not always work, however my computer was running noticeably slower. On another note, I believe updating my BIOS and reinstalling all of my drivers has resolved my issues as they have disappeared.

That would be my assumtion as well. If your old bios did not support the speed of your new RAM, it may have defaulted to something signifcantly less than optimal, and with a bios update it may "default" correctly.

That being said, really slow but abundant RAM is rarely something that would affect your general windows experience. So it is still somewhat conspicuous.
