Upgrading quite old PC to a build which will include a RTX4070.

I’ve seen current gen of cards come with a 12VHPWR connector that seem to connect to 2x 8 pin power cables.
Id like to get the cable mod 90 degree adapter ( ) but it appears to then want a a 12 pin power cable to put power to it.

The question:
Can I use 2x 6pin PCIe power cables to connect to this? Or do I need to buy a new appropriate power cable(s) to connect to the CableMod adapter? (and if so will ideally need to find a white, braided one! which I think CableMod may make themselves)

For context, have an HX850 PSU.
My power cables:

Please educate me! Thanks

Gold or Platinum efficiency?

Bad idea.

If you have Gold efficiency PSU, then you need to use CableMod custom configurator to make a power cable which has 2-3 8-pin on one end (plugs directly into your PSU) while the other end is the new 16-pin connector, that plugs into the angled adapter. (RTX 40-series needs 16-pin connector, which consists of 12 big pins and 4 small pins. RTX 30-series needs the 12-pin connector and is incompatible with the latest 16-pin connector. CableMod angled adapter is 16-pin connector.)

But if your PSU is Platinum efficiency, then CableMod has the appropriate cable for your PSU, namely Corsair Type 4 cable,
modflex: https://eustore.cablemod.com/produc...flex-sleeved-12vhpwr-pci-e-cable-for-corsair/
modmesh: https://eustore.cablemod.com/produc...flex-sleeved-12vhpwr-pci-e-cable-for-corsair/

Diff between the modflex and modmesh is that modflex cables are a bit thinner and easier to bend around. Modmesh cables are fatter with more vibrant colors but harder to bend around corners.
All 3 PCs i have, are using CableMod modflex power cables.

Middle: Haswell build
Right: AMD build

Really appreciate this, thank you.

Sorry to ask for further basic hand holding…

My PSU is platinum efficiency. Of the options you suggested I would prefer the modflex cable.
It comes in two (white) options: “16-pin to 3 x 8-pin PCI-e” or “16-pin to 2 x 8-pin PCI-e”. Are you aware of whether one is more suitable for my needs. Or they are both compatible and it is just a matter of preference, in which case not sure why anyone would go for a 3x8pin if the difference is physically taking more connector spaces.

Thanks again, I’m just particularly keen to not fry any components or burn the house down.
Feel I must be googling nonsense, didn’t have a lot of luck finding simple resources on this.

Amount of 8-pin connectors on other side of 12VHPWR cable determinate the wattage rating of the GPU that you can use. It goes like so:
4x 8-pin = 600W = RTX 4090
3x 8-pin = 450W = RTX 4080
2x 8-pin = 300W = RTX 4070 Ti

So, if you ever are going to use only RTX 4070 Ti and not RTX 4080, get the cable with 2x 8-pin connectors. Going with 3x 8-pin connector cable gives you more flexibility, both in GPU OC (RTX 4070 Ti is 285W GPU) and further GPU upgrades (e.g to RTX 4080 or upcoming RTX 50-series).

Though, we don't know if RTX 50-series is also going to use the 12VHPWR connector and what wattage rating GPUs there will be. Also, for RTX 4080, i'd be comfortable using 1000W (1kW) PSU, rather than 850W unit.

Genuine thank you for all your effort. You have really helped me!

I will push my luck with another part but ignore me if your patience has run out

The angled adapter came back in stock for my country so bought one quickly! The cable will take multiple months to arrive, so after your explanation can somewhat confidently say I'll get this one instead
I would not upgrade until 60 series at the earliest now, so think the 2 ended cable would not be limiting

Thanks again, really appreciate it!

Sure, you can go with Corsair cable as well. In the end, it's your PC and your preference how the cable looks. :)

I'm running Seasonic units myself and outside CableMod, there aren't any other good choice. Hence why i'm using CableMod. And back in the day, modflex was only option too. Modmesh came at later date. Still, i'm happy with CableMod and besides PSU power cables, i've also ordered a bunch of other eyecandy from them (which you might tell from my pics).
