So I have been going over this in my head for at least a month. Good thing my old PSU isn't that old but I am afraid it is going to start going soon.
Currently I have a Corsair AX750 80+ Gold purchased in Q3 2013, it is a bit overkill for my single GPU setup but it works well and hasn't had any issues despite being left in a garage for about a year.
But as I mentioned it has a few things I need to have upgraded.
1.) I don't have any of the extra cables or the packaging, which sucks because I have a Zotac AMP! Extreme 1080 and it uses 2 8-pin connectors, luckily my PSU either isn't fully modular or my friend (who gave me the old system which I have since completely overhauled except the PSU) had an extra one in there and I was able to use two 6-pin in the adapters to power my GPU. But it looks crappy and it's taking up a little bit too much space for my liking.
2.) its getting old and I have no room to do anything more if I wanted to add a GPU I would be SOL.
So I have been looking into other PSU's.
So starting out what I want is something fully modular, that comes with nice braided cables, and just that premium feel to it, and of course leaves room for expansion if I so choose to later, but won't screw me at lower utilization.
But most importantly, will last for years without crapping out on me or giving me trouble.
Now about GPU's, if I want to add a GPU later, and I fully plan on upgrading to a 1080 Ti Amp Extreme, when they become available, I would be able to utilize SLI. So I am looking at at least an 850W plus PSU, more than I need at the moment but gives me the flexibility to add later, if I so choose. So whatever I get has to be at least 850/860W.
So let's get down to business.
These are my contenders in order of how much I want them, each has it's own drawbacks, namely in all the reviews I have seen of them being DOA, or crapping out in either a few days, weeks or months, and WCS, exploding and taking the system with it.
1) Corsair AX860i
I have heard enough bad to keep me away so far or I might already have it, mostly power cycling issues when it randomly shuts down and begins an endless boot cycle, it seems keeping the fan on alleviates this so I am more comfortable with it now.
2) EVGA Supernova 850 P2
The reviews on this scare the hell out me, apparently there is a tiny chance it will fry my system, not cool bro.
3)EVGA Supernova G2
The reviews on this are fantastic and it is one of the most highly rated pieces of hardware I have seen from a computer, but I would really like a platinum rated and the extra cables that come with them, like I said I want to be able to expand if I feel like it.
So I definitely don't want to go over 850W but I need an 850W and I don't want a Gold rated, I might just need to get over that but I want the best of the best, my whole system is top of the line stuff, so I need my power supply to be top of the line as well (within reason, of course, I'm not spending $400 for an AX1500)
What should I do?
