Remove any possible costs from GF, if applicable, the ATI 5 series will hit, in fyll coverage, which will be plentiful, and hs no competition, and Intels newest wont have much for sales right off.

Jenny, what the heck! Intel did not outsource Atom. They build Atom at their 45nm plants. Intel only outsourced Atom in SOC format.

At this time I have yet to hear if any company has designed a SOC Atom.

 

you just never know with Intel. with 35 billion a year in income its not wise to underestimate them.
 

Some people still cling to the idea that Intel is a gigantically bloated arrangement of buffoons. Some people actually think that AMD engineers are more "intelligent" than Intel engineers and that Intel enjoys wasting money on futile efforts.

Fact is that, the Intel of pre-2006 is not the Intel of post-2006.

I wouldn't underestimate Intel at this point (so I agree with you).

Intel is a large ship to steer, but when steered into the right direction, no Icebergs or oncoming ships can stop it's path of destruction. Intel is one large behemoth (resource wise both economically and when it comes to engineering talent).

Of course one could always become overconfident and fall prey to the "Titanic" syndrome (not even God himself could sink this ship syndrome).
 


Chad, I will take that bet. I believe they will also loose money in Q1 2010. They came very close in Q4 to braking even in Q4 2009 in a resurgent qtr. Both Intel and AMD indicated in their Q4 filings that they expect Q1 to follow the historical quarterly revenue.

Intel to tap 32-nanometer chips for 2010 growth

Intel's plan for growth in 2010 can be summed up in one esoteric term: 32 nanometer. That's where Intel's chips are going across the board--laptops, servers, and even new markets like smartphones, according to chief executive Paul Otellini and chief financial officer Stacy Smith, who spoke during the company's fourth-quarter earnings conference call Thursday afternoon.

Intel reported earnings Thursday that were unusually strong, blowing past even upbeat Wall Street forecasts.
And what's the secret of Intel's success? Process technology. Intel is in the midst of moving the bulk of its chips from a 45-nanometer manufacturing process to an industry-leading 32-nanometer process. Generally, the smaller the geometries, the faster and more power efficient the chip. Intel is better at executing these critical process transitions than any chipmaker on the planet.

"What we're doing...is moving 32 nanometer into the mainstream more quickly than we did with 45 (nanometer)," Otellini said during the earnings conference call. "Looking ahead over the next three months, we are planning to refresh our entire server product line with new 32-nanometer Xeon (processors)."
CFO Smith echoed this sentiment, saying that "mainstream and value versions" of 32-nanometer chips will appear later in the year, thereby completing an across-the-board transition to this new technology.

And Intel telegraphed this transition at the Consumer Electronics Show last week when it rolled out dozens of new processors based on 32-nanometer technology. These new chips include the latest versions of the Core i3, Core i5, and Core i7 processors. The mobile version of the 32-nanometer Core i5 has already made it into new laptops from Hewlett-Packard and Dell and is expected to make an appearance in new MacBook Pros from Apple.

What else is hot at Intel? Atom. This processor powers Netbooks and Intel's very large but mundane "embedded" chip business. "Atom design momentum is very strong with our new 'Pine Trail' platform in over 80 Netbook designs. In the embedded space, we now have over 600 Atom-based design wins," Otellini said.

In 2009, Atom and Netbooks became a $1.4 billion business for Intel, Smith said.
Eventually, 32-nanometer chips will also drive Intel's push into smartphones. "At CES we demonstrated progress with handhelds...built around Atom cores. We demonstrated for the first time the LG GW990 (smartphone) built with our yet-released Atom 'Moorestown' platform," Otellini said.

 


Verne, that all depends on how many design wins they get and how popular the design wins are.
 
have you seen atom powered phones? id call that a design win and a half. I really think between itx netboxes and net books and atom cell phones there is a massive market, it just puts computing in the hands of virtually anyone. Thats where id imagined pc tech when I wrote the rfid article years ago. eventually home entertainment pc's will all be itx netbox type units. lets face it pc's are cumbersome and as nodes shrink even offices will start going to atom like pc's.

its a very cheap very manageable technology that will sell. Iam like 90% posotive atom will bank 2b or more this year, its just smart tech.

I see it in cars household applications , anywhere small tech could be of service which is virtually everywhere.
 

I'd be holding off my enthusiasm for Atom for a while longer.

Sure it has a lot of potential, a hell of a lot, but if it was already such a slam dunk, wouldn't more companies have publicly committed to it, than just LG?
 

Apple isnt on board yet eh? I need to look into whos doing atom cells.
 


LG and some company that doesn't do the US.

I think Atom will do great in the smartphone arena since the best chip thus far is in the Nexus, the Qualcomm 1GHz chip. Everything els has a pretty low processor and something like Atom would do great.

So far the people who have used the LG Moorestown based phone have said it loads apps fast, multitasks easily and runs pretty good.
 

Is the size of that phone only because they wanted a screen that big, or does it indicate that Moorestown isn't small enough(and possibly runs cool enough) to be in smaller form factors?
 
updated] Intel and Nokia announced today they have created a strategic alliance to cooperate on future mobile devices as computing and communications converge.

They did not specifically say that Nokia will use Intel’s Atom processors in cell phones in a conference call this morning. But Anand Chandrasekher, head of the Atom business unit at Intel, said that Intel will work on x86-based designs with Nokia.

On top of that, Nokia will work with Intel on future versions of Moblin, a Linux-based operating system aimed at netbooks and other computing/communications hybrid devices. And Intel will license Nokia’s HSDPA 3G technology, which is a radio to deliver calls and data over the same broadband wireless network.

There is another one thats near the size of a iPhone so my thoughts are going towards that they just want the "my screen is bigger than your screen" approach.

Plus this is just 45nm Atom. Can't wait to see 32nm.
 
Intel (INTC) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. (TSMC) Monday announced a collaboration involving Intel’s Atom processor. Under the deal, Intel will port Atom CPU cores to TSMC’s technology platform, a move intended to expand its market for Atom System-on-Chip ((SoC)) processors. In a statement, the company said:

With this joint effort, Intel intends to significantly broaden the market opportunities for its Intel Atom SoCs and accelerate deployment of the architecture through multiple SoC implementations. At the same time, TSMC extreach ends its technology platform to serve the Intel Architecture market segments.
