About a month ago, my dads PC had a blown capacitor while I was using it. We sent it off to be repaired as we had warranty and got it back yesterday. What can I do to prevent a capacitor from blowing up again. I do not know the make of the PSU as it was prebuilt by PCSpecialist (on the invoice it doesnt say the model).
 
Solution
UPS = Uninterruptible Power Supply.
Basically, a big battery box that sits between your wall power and the PC. Whatever happens with the wall/house power is buffered by the UPS> If the house power goes OFF, that allows you to shut down the systems gracefully.

Overload - Don't use a low wattage PSU with power hungry parts. This goes along with using a crappy PSU.

As always, identify the problem before applying a solution.

  1. Have a good quality PSU
  2. Don't overload whatever PSU it is
  3. Have a UPS between the PC and the house wiring
  4. Have any whole house electrical issues investigated

Right I see. But youre gonna have to dumb it down a bit for me. For eg when you say don't overload it, how would I know if it is being overloaded. Also what is a UPS?
