My Device Manager show HPScanjet 3300c #3 under the imaging category.
How could I be able to make it HPScanjet 3300c instead of "HPScanjet
3300c #3". Uninstalling the driver and then reinstalling shows again and
again the same HPScanjet 3300c #3. Of late my scanner does not work and
all the instructions from HP did not solve my problem and I would like
to try removing "HPScanjet 3300c #3" and then reinstalling the scanner a
fresh to see if that solves the problem.

The reference number as you outline can be the result of removing and
reinstalling. Since you have done this several times, my guess is, the
problem is the driver itself. Have you checked the HP site for the latest
XP compatible drivers for your scanner?

Yes I did check the latest driver and installed it but with no luck. The
reference number has not changed despite the fact I must have removed
and reinstalled the scanner more than dozen of times. Is there no way to
remove #3 with the scanner that I am seeing in the Device Manager?

My problem is:the scanner tries to scan but the flashing horizontal
light after moving about 2.5cms from top goes back and I get the
following error: "An error occurred during preview. If the scanner is
being used, please wait for it to complete the task and then click preview."

There's probably a registry hack for such a thing but unless you are showing
3 actual devices as this single scanner, I don't think that is the issue.

In addition to the drivers, did your scanner come with a software suite that
you have installed? If this scanner was installed pre-Windows XP, it's
likely the software suite that came with the scanner is not compatible with
XP regardless of the drivers and could cause the sort of issue you describe.
I'd remove such software, reinstall the scanner drivers if necessary and try
again.

If that fails, I'd contact the scanner's tech support.
