Processor always running at 100%

Lately my computer has been running slow as a snail. When I hit control-alt-del, I see my processor is always running at 100%.

I scanned for spyware using two different programs. I also scanned the registry as well as for viruses, but none of the programs ever come up with anything. There are also no devices attached that are causing any conflicts.

Is there anything I can do? Does this mean my processor is running too hot and I need to get a new one if I can’t find any spyware or viruses that are taking up the processors resources??

Did you see which processus is using all the CPU in the processus tab?

You better back up anything important. Spyware, ad ware, or a viral infection.

Type the name of the process into google. It should tell you who can recognize the virus for what it is.
Updating the patern file for your anti-virus prog may also help.
There is also a new ver. of ad-aware (free) that may help.

Thanks for the responses.

Thats the other thing I am confused about - there are no processes running that are taking up huge resources, otherwise I would have found that easily. I am also running the newest version of Ad-Ware as well as am running the latest defs for Norton Anti-Virus.

do a google for spoolsv.exe.
It is probably a printer/SP2 problem, but check it out.

The problem was spoolsv.exe!!

Sorry, one last question. How can I disable spoolsv.exe from booting every time I start my computer? I did numerous google searches, but it didn't say anything concrete on how to do it.

I can manually close it by going to alt-cntrl-del but it starts up again by itself after 10 minutes of working on my computer.

The number "97" after spoolsv is the % of cpu usage. Then yes, there was a process that was running and taking lots of CPU ressources...

start -> run -> type in msconfig -> go to the services tab and unclick it (print spooler i think its called)....that'll get rid of it though, i don't think you want that, check microsoft's online thingy for help

Are you using a printer? What type? Is it pluged in now? USB?
Try uninstalling it, and loading the drivers from the manufacturer.
I think the problem is most common with HP, usb connected printers, on WinXP. I think the problem usually goes away when you load HP's drivers, and/or register.

or if you don't like the msconfig then you can try using microsoft anti spyware beta's advanced tab that you can disable any program from running..... i tried to stop the shell (explorer.exe) from running and............. lol

it is easy enought to fix though, just control+alt+delete and in task manager and press run and typee in explorer.exe and off you go, i found it to be a very nice joke to play on the school computers, until they almost had to call in some technition from downtown (which i think costs extra on these occasions........ wtf man its the same school board and once ou can them they want extras???? geeze...) and i had to help "resolve" the problem.........

also, I suggest checking show process from all user. Like this you will see the whole picture and extra process used by the system...
Oh and I like spybot better than ad-aware!

BTW killing the explorer.exe process and restarting it is sometimes really helpfull when your computer is half frozen hehe

A lot of good info about that "bug". I personnaly encounter this problem once on my sister's computer. I had to remove EVERYTHING related to is Epson printer, I unplugged the printer too. Then after cleaning all the mess (removed ALL printer related drivers). I plugged back the printer and I reinstalled the drivers.

I also disabled SPOOLING from the printer properties, I think most printers have this option. You might also try to change spooling type from RAW to EMF or vice-versa.

Thanks for all the help everyone!!

I went into msconfig and disabled the spooling process. Works great now...my computer is back to its regular speed.

However with is now disabled, I have to restart my computer and re-enable it just to print things which is hastle. I'm still a little lost on how I can have the spooler disabled and have the printer actually still print.

I know I can go to "print directly to printer" but it seems like when I have that enabled with no spooler, it chugs the printer and never prints anything.

I have a HP Deskjet 5150 running XP2.

Try reloading the HP drivers. You will probably have to register, or re-register with HP.

BTW no need to reboot!
start --- run
spoolv.exe will restart the process than you can kill it afterward...

But yes cleaning all teh drivers and reloading them would probly be cleaner!
Also a format with fresh isntal does wonder on xp

Try searching for windows XP services. Services have 3 settings automatic, manual, and disabled.

It still might be a virus. Appearantly some virii use that process name to hide themselves.
