[SOLVED] Processor Upgrade

Hello all!

I believe I have a simple question that probably many of you can answer easily enough. I have a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5820k CPU @ 3.30GHz. Apparently this is not strong enough to handle some of the newer video games coming out such as Deathloop. I do a lot of gaming on my system and wanted people's thoughts on what kind of upgrade I can get for my i7 that doesn't require a full install of a new motherboard. Any thoughts or recommendations?

There is the possibility of something like the i7-6900K or i7-6950X, or a high core count Xeon. None of those would be recommendations today though. Far better off with a CPU/Motherboard/RAM upgrade to something current.

On your current platform I agree with Eximo, A overall upgrade would be better.

Please note that lga 2011v3 motherboards and cpu's fetch good money still on second hand market.

Without knowing the mobo you have it's not possible to tell.

I mean he's clearly on 2011-3 so the board doesn't really matter. On that socket there is no CPU that will net enough gain in gaming over a 5820k to justify the price.

The socket may support a cpu that does not mean the bios will.

I get that but this is the same question more or less has been asked in the past in regards to this platform. On that platform the 5820k as a gaming CPU is about as good as it gets even when compared to the best in socket 6900k is only a general 8% increase.

True... there may be nothing worth upgrading to on the mobo.

It would still be nice to know what the mobo is before giving the op options.

Not worth sticking any money into that old system, CPU wise. Time for a new CPU, motherboard, and ram.

As Eximo says, I would also recommend a full system upgrade. Some of the newer games already call for a 8400. An Alder Lake CPU, even some of the less strong like a 12400, will outperform any option you will have with that board while being rather affordable. You can pair those with a B660, for example. Good ones cost maybe 130€, plus about 180€ for the CPU and some more for the RAM, depending on how much you want. Older CPUs can be expensive, too, so the price difference is likely not that big anyways.

Your I7-5820K actually comes close.
You have 12 processing threads and a passmark rating of 9814.
The I8-8400 has 6 threads and a rating of 9223.
Where your processor falls down is in single thread performance; 2010 vs. 2404
Single thread performance is very important for games and overall quickness.

I found no processors that would fit your motherboard with a sufficiently strong single thread performance.
Run the cpu-z bench test and look at your single thread performance rating.
It should be about 514:

What to do???

If you have not yet done so, you could try overclocking.

It is often nasty to have to do a clean install of windows on a new motherboard and also reinstall apps and settings for which the media has been lost.
Many here will recommend that you do just that.
They could be right.

But, I have found that windows 10 does a good job of figuring out what to do with a new motherboard, leaving you with only the task of installing motherboard driver updates.

I would imagine that your ram could be reused.

Do you have a budget?

I would think that a I5-12600K would be a very good upgrade.
It has 16 threads, a passmark rating of 27025 and a single thread rating of 397
