These past two weeks have been very stressful trying to work out what is wrong with my computer.
The problem: Every time it seems when I play a 3D game my computer will turn off and turn on again with in 1-5 hours of playing. I have documented every time this happened; 14. 10/14 times when it turns back on again i get a screen that comes up saying "Power surge was recorded" (before It gets to windows) the other times it just comes up with the "windows did not shut down correctly". And one of the times it turned off and turned on while I was just skyping and listening to music. 2/14 times it has lasted approx 4 hours, 9/14 times it has lasted approx 2 and 11/14 it has lasted .30-1 hours. Seems to happen much sooner with java programs eg. Minecraft.
What I have noted: The power supply makes a slight buzzing noise. The power cord doesn't appear to sit in the power socket of the PSU firmly.
things I've done: I've been through a VERY long process of trying to isolate the issue. I firstly started with reseating all the wires in the motherboard, it wasn't that. tried using a tic-tac box to keep the power cord straight in the socket (didn't work). Taken the PSU out and placed it back in. rearranged all cords didn't change anything. Increased the voltage in the 'Catalyst control center' and likewise turned it down but didn't change anything. Turned "enable graphics over drive" on and off. turned fan speed down and up. Taken it into a computer place and they ran it for 3 hours they told me and there wasn't an issue.
Thing I've considered: Okay so going through 100s of PC forums, threads, blogs, etc etc trying to find the issue.
Here's the things I think it could be:
Faulty power supply
Non fitting cord/manufacturing mistake with the socket
Unusual fluctuation in the power grid (dad greatly disagrees)
Using the heater or washing machine w/ PC running (large power spike when these appliances are turned on)
Problem with the processor/processor cooler
Short circuit some where
I also built this PC myself 3 weeks ago. So here's the parts I used:
1 CoolerMaster V8 CPU Cooler
1 102 Piece Computer Tool Kit
1 CoolerMaster HAF X Case
1 Intel Core i5 2500K (1155 socket)
1 ASUS VE248H 24in Widescreen LED Monitor
1 Western Digital Green 3TB WD30EZRX (OS: says only 2tb)
1 Antec High Current Pro 750W Power Supply HCP-750
1 G.Skill Ripjaws X F3-17000CL9D-8GBXM (2x4GB) DDR3
1 ASUS PCE-N15 Wireless N PCIe Adaptor
1 Lite-On IHES212 12X Bluray Combo
1 Gigabyte Radeon HD7870 2GB Overclocked
1 ASUS P8Z77-V DELUXE Motherboard
Everything is covered by at least a 2 year warranty Providing there's no negligent damage to the part.
