Im having some trouble, but im not sure what's causing the problem.

Lately, my psu fan has begun to make a loud noise on startup, which fades after a couple of minutes.

Additionally, at times my HDD is not detected, but i can generallly get it to work by removing and reconnecting the cables.

At times the system, doesnt go into POST. Instead, the hdd spins up, stops and spins up again.

Is this a problem with the PSU, the mainboard or the hard drive? Im inclined to blame the power supply. Id really appreciate if someone could help me out.

specs:
P4 1.5G Willamette
Intel 845 mainboard
256*2 133M SD RAM
MSI Geforce 4200 Ti
Antec 300W PSU
Samsung SV4012H
Sony DVD burner, Sony DVD drive

like you said it im also "inclined" to believe its your power supply. it sounds like its not powerful enough and the hdd isnt gettnig enough power so its shifting on an off often, which obvisouly just isnt acceptable. Actually reading your specs now it sounds like you have a failing PSU, it should normally be able to handle it.

Has your HDD been makng any unusual sounds or clicking noises? Have you tested it with a utility from the mfr?

The POST by the computer is not associated with the HDD and should happen even if the HDD is faulty, so even if you do have HDD issues I think you have other issues. have you tried reflashing the BIOS? Are you virus/adware/spyware free?
