wasn't there a few versions of True Power units? current Classis, old Trio / Quattro, older with no extra tag, etc? I have an old True Power Trio that's been rock solid since 2008.
So technically no way to tell which type or truepower I'll get. Hope they're all okay. Also will the 550w be enough assuming I want to overclock. Tried the psu calculator( the extream one) and computed to 570w when over clocking the cpu

Nope all the models are different. The one the shopkeeper showed you is probably the one I linked. That one is ok. You can see the PSU label pic on that site so that you can confirm.
thanks for the link, just finished reading it, took a while coz I kinda got sidetrack reading all the comments =) It was a good read. The problem is, i wasnt able to actually see the TP 550 up close, it will be delivered to the shop by wednesday and ill be able to look at the packaging by then. All the salesman showed me was a page from their website
The only 80 Plus Bronze Antec TP 550 is the TP New chimera201 linked to above. That has to be the unit. It rated well in 2010. By today's much higher standards it wouldn't do quite as well. Very likely based on the group regulated Seasonic S12 II platform and not Haswell compatible although you can just disable the low power C states. Also as said above it's a discontinued unit so it's been sitting on a shelf somewhere a while.
A decent unit but you can probably do better for the same money.
thanks guys, off to find another one then. By the way can you guys help me out? Can you check the link i posted and recommend a psu from that site? Pretty please =) Just thought that would be better than posting one PSU after another =)
PS: Also im trying to stay bellow 5k if possible =)
The True Power New TP-550 uses Seasonic as the OEM and is based on a more modern DC-to-DC circuit topology which makes it Intel Haswell compatible. It definitely is not based on the old group regulated design.
It's more than sufficient for the i7-4790k and Gtx970.

Well when I'm wrong I'm wrong
In all fairness I didn't check I just guessed based on the reviews from 2009-2010. Thankfully we have people more knowledgeable than myself! I wasn't aware Seasonic used another 80 Plus Bronze platform back then.
Well I can't believe CM Thunder Series with Jun Fu and CapXon caps is Haswell compatible
eh, you know there's a difference between "Haswell compatible" and "good solid quality", right? just cuz it's one doesn't mean it's the other by default.

I know what it means. it means it has and supports certain features. has nothing to do with inherent build quality. and is completely irrelevant for those who are running Ivy, Sandy, or AMD. so, yeah, who cares.
a ford pinto has seatbelts, ergo it's 100% safe at all times for at least 50 years?
^ I wanted to know which series' of CM are Haswell Compatible. I am not in any mood to buy a PSU.
As for Cooler Master - the big fat liar in the PSU business.
Anyways, got a little spare time this Sunday and I made a PSU list for my country India based on jonnyguru's Tier list. It wasn't much since there are only 4 brands - Antec, CoolerMaster, Corsair, Seasonic. I also used a weird formula to calculate VFM. The numbers are weird but it does tell you whether a certain PSU is a deal or not. Here is the link.
