Q6600 overclock on IP35 pro chipset

Looking for some advice here ladies and gents.

I have a Q6600 and a Ip35 pro chipset. I have DDR2 800mhz memory, and i want to OC the cpu to 3.2ghz with a 1.1 memory ratio. Iv'e overclocked it to 3.2ghz with 356 fsb and 9x multiplier. But i had to change memory timings to 1.1.25 i believe it was.

I could only get it to 2.8ghz with a 1.1 ratio.

Iv'e read that 400fsb and 8x multiplier will get me a 1.1 ratio at 3.2ghz however will i have to increase any other voltages aswell as Vcore. I use 1.35v on the Vcore, and it stable and doesn't generate too much heat. 60c after 24 hours of prime 95 on large FTT.

Would it be ok to leave my overclock as it is with 1.1.25 timings on the memory. Or is it highly advised to stick to a 1.1 ratio

I have 4 OC'd C2 systems (2 quad and 2 dual core)I and running the memory at 1:1 on all of them. Overclocking memory on a Core2 system gets you little if any real world performance gain.

OTOH, if you have a stable overclock, there's no need to medd with the settings.

The only reason i changed the timings on the memory was to get it stable. As if i didn't alter the timings i would blue screen as soon as i saved the settings.

It's stable as it is, but iv'e read that keeping the memory 1:1 keeps it the most stable. But i don't want to have to faff around with loads of different voltages.

V core and memory voltage are the only ones i have changed at the moment. And only minor adjustments at that

My max fsb stated from manufacturer is 1333, so 400 fsb and 8 times multiplier isn't going to work by the looks of it. So i may stick with my initial OC. Lot's of reviews say my board is very solid for overclocking. Even when you fiddle with the memory timings and ratio.

The max multiplier on the Q6600 is 9x (last time I checked).

If your goal is 3.2 GHz "Core Speed" then ...

3200 MHz "Core Speed" / 9 multiplier = 356 MHz "Bus Speed"
(using CPU-Z nomenclature)

356 MHz Bus Speed x 4 = ~1424 MHz "Rated FSB"

If you can't reach 356, then try 333 which should be very easy; and,
I found a User Manual for that motherboard and the P35 chipset
does support a "Rated FSB" of 1333 MHz.

Also, in your BIOS, see the "μGuru" utility a/k/a "OC Guru".


Don't worry about the FSB : DRAM ratio:
there is nothing sacrosanct about 1 : 1 .

With SpeedStep ("EIST") enabled, the multiplier should alternate
between 6x and 9x automatically.

The board is rated at 1333 FSB because it supports CPUs with a 1333 FSB it doesnt mean it cant go past that. Also I am guessing that you are overclocking from the operating system. I would use the bios if you are because it is much more stable.
Like MRFS said use the Bios "μGuru" utility a/k/a "OC Guru".

Trust me it is not the board, The IP35 pro was the best overclocking board I had, as a matter of fact I am thinking about building a second rig with the extra parts I have laying around using this board and my E8400. I bought this board in 2007 and I refuse to let it go. Abit made great products it sucks that they went under.

Ditto that excellent advice!

Also, remember that enabling EIST will most probably
activate a multiplier that alternates between 6x and 9x.

So, you may want to disable EIST if you want to run
fixed multiplier all the time.


With our ASUS P5W64 WS Professional (i975 chipset),
the BIOS supports a pre-set "Overclock Profile" of FSB1333/DDR2-834,
which runs our Q6600 very well together with SpeedStep ("EIST") enabled.

This setting results in a Bus Speed of 333.5 MHz,
a DRAM Frequency of 416.9 MHz (i.e. 834 / 2),
and a multiplier that alternates between 6x and 9x:

333.5 x 6 = ~ 2.0 GHz
333.5 x 9 = ~ 3.0 GHz

FSB : DRAM ratio is 4 : 5 with this Corsair DDR2-1066:

q6600 at 3.2 should pose no problem, (I've got mine to 3.4 using a flimsy 20 dollar heatsink, and this is my first attempt, I believe this chip has lots of potential which Im too experienced to tap into)

For me getting to 3.2 was very easy and straight forward, 3.2-->3.4 was very tough, lots of fidling with voltages etc.

Leave everything on auto, mobo does the rest,

make it 9x356,

Raise Vcore until post until you reach 1.5v (dont go over that because you should never need that much I think, my 3.4 only requires 1.432 ish) if there are still errors and BSOD's its most likely the Ram voltage or the NB and SB voltages, up those a little, and viola

(as a guidelines, I believe my settings for 3.4 is :
9 x 378

Vcore voltage 1.42500
2.02 Dram Voltage
1.45 NB Voltage
1.075 SB Voltage

everything not listed is on auto

what you can do is, lower each of these voltages by a few increments, and test it for your rig, it should post and all you gotta do is minor adjustments (its what i did, took someone else's settings for 3.2, raised everything a bit, and adjust my way into success)

Cheers for the good input everyone. I am using the bios to OC, as the OC guru is utter pants. It put my core voltage at 1.45 for 2.8ghz, and you can hit that without any extra voltage.

It's currently at 3.2ghz but of course my fsb to memory ratio is lowered to keep the memory working efficiently.

So i will try when i get my water cooling unit installed to get it to 400fsb x 8. And a 1:1 ratio so my ram will be at stock speed. My voltage for cpu is 1.35v and ram is at 2.0v. All other voltages are stock. Speedstep is turned off to save the issues with voltage dropping. I was scared to try 400fsb because of what i read about being 1333fsb processor capable. I thought that would have meant the max speed my fsb can run at. So thanks for clearing that up for me.

If i'm getting 60c at full load with an Asus Silent Sqaure Evo, that has a big build up of dust, my water cooling unit should do the trick nicely. So i may even push it to 3.6ghz. Depending on temps. I'll update the thread when it's done. Fingers crossed my 3 pin pwm cable to molex will come tomorrow so i can set the water cooling up.

I've got it at the same settings i first had it oc'd at. 3.2ghz (still have speedstep enabled, vdroop doesn't seem to be affecting my oc at all).

With my new watercooling unit, i'm getting 33,39,30,31 idle. And 53, 56, 48, 49 max load after 4 hours of prime 95.

1.35 Vcore and 2.0v on the memory. Memory is at 840mhz and very stable.

Same here. I do not wish to upping the voltage while OC my Q6600. What's the best way to get it. I don't aim for amazing OC like 3,6ghz. Being modest I only want OC that does not increase voltage with stock cooling,
