socket am2, ga-m57sli, 5000+ BE, 2x 1gig gskill, arctic cooling freezer pro 64, gigabyte hd 3870 w/zalman cooler (came with nwn 2) raidmax smilodon case (green and black 500w psu), 320 gig hdd, samsung dvd burner. now that we're done with the base system i paid like 600 or so for the whole shabang...
now for the upgrades,
22" samsung - 275
19" acer (1680x1050 as well) - 150
hauppauge 1800 - 100
daul trendnet gigabit ethernet - 20
500 gig hdd, 50
belkin n52 te - 45
micro$haft sidewinder mouse - 45 ( i know i know, it's micro$haft)
few fans, like 9 bucks
2x 1 gig super talent - 20 bucks
card reader - 5 bucks
logitech x540's 80 bucks
... think that's about it
i figured it up once, total overall is like 1300 bucks built the original build over a year ago, and if some of those parts seem cheap (n52te) it's cuz i worked at a pc shop.
every piece is still kicking btw.

1300, final answer

2,600 then about 350 for an upgrade in february of '07, then another upgrade to a dual core Athlon as soon I played the crysis demo :).

Just upgraded my video to a 4870 1GB

So about 3200+ over the last 5+ years.

Original rig (April 2007):
Intel C2D E6600 - $180
Asus P5W Deluxe - $200
Antec LANBOY - $100
Enermax 500W - $125
2x1 GB OCZ DDR2-1066 - $100
WD Raptor 150 - $200
WD Caviar 320 - $100
eVGA 7600GT - $150
Zalman 9500 - $40
...so about $1200

I recently upgraded some parts, bought a Palit 4870 X2, 4 GB of GSkill DD2-1066, 700W Silverstone PSU and a new Cooler Master CM690 case. All in all, about $1900 over two years.

Original GPU two years ago was an eVGA 7600GT. Through separate LAN tournaments, I won a BFG 8600GTS back on late '07, followed by a Sapphire 3870 this past September. Bumped it up to a 4870 X2 a few weeks ago

$2700+ CND:

-Maximus Formula
-E8500
-4x1GB Corsair Dominator RAM
-BFG 8800GTS 512MB OC
-Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme Cooler
-Thermaltake Armor
-Antec NeoPower 650W PSU
-500 and 320GB Seagate HDDs
-2x LG DVD-R/W LightScribe

-Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW
-Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard
-Razer Lachesis Gaming Mouse
-Logitech Z-2300 2.1 Speakers

hmm. ~1700$

350-Asus 1000HA
400-Intel X25-E 32GB
20-2GB RAM
50-Logitech VX Nano
250-M-Audio Audiophile USB
350-Parasound Z-amp
300-Grado SR-325i

Totally worth it. The audio setup's been that way since 2006. The SSD-amped eeePC is the most convenient and carelessly easy to use computer I've ever had based on size and lack of HD spindle to damage.

Have 2 full size laptops, only use them when I need the larger screen/CPU for spreadsheets/image processing.

Adaptec 2405 $250
Samsung 1 Tb SATA F2 $75 * 7
OpenSolaris running ZFS RAID-Z2: free

Ick, over $5k in a year, slighly more than I thought... Everything well worth it though, perhaps with the exception of the GFX card, I don't play nearly enough games to justify that one...

it cost me $1300, but that without the case and some other stuff, at the end after I completed the system it cost me about $1525...
the system ended up with
Athlon 64 X2 5000, Thermaltake BigTyphoon VX, ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe WiFi Edition, Corsair XMS2-PC6400 C4 ( 2x1GB ), BFG GeForce 7950GT 512MB, Zalman VF-900Cu LED, 2x Seagate 320GB 7200.10, Gigabyte 3D Aurora 570, S-Tek 500W Modular PSU...
last year I made some upgrades that can be considered as new system too ( new mobo, CPU, VGA, HDD & PSU ), they costed $1077...
the system now ended with Phenom II 940BE, ASUS M3A79-T, Thermaltake BigTyphoon VX, 2x Seagates, 1x 1TB WD HDD, eVGA GeForce GTX 260 c216

Each new system since 86 has averaged between $3,000 & $4,500 (including things like tax, system software, printer, cables, etc). That being said I only just retired the Xenix (1986) system last year, and the 90, 94 & 98 systems work great as mini-servers and legacy software platforms.

Most expensive part? 86 & 90 would be the system memory / LIM expansion boards. Nothing like spending $2k on memory for a $4k system. Since then it would have to be the monitor. Those NEC MultiSync screens were just plain expensive when you hit 21+". Now though you can get a 42" HD LCDs for a similar of the price. Now if they could just get a 19"+ screen on a quadcore laptop ...

I added mine up and it was close to $2300. It really isn't so bad when you consider that I migrated about half the components from my last computer, including many of the most costly (monitor, speakers, video card, etc.) Spacing the upgrades out over time really helps reduce the impact at any particular moment.

The video card was the most costly component at almost $500, but it has lasted me quite a while It's one of the first generation 8800 GTS 640mb cards. It's in line for an replacement soon, but I'm kind of waiting until another major revision to graphics cards comes out before I get another one.

It's hard to say because my PC is constantly evolving – a new hard drive here, a faster CPU there. I also sell most of the old stuff which makes up for much of the cost, and sometimes I buy used components myself when I find a good deal.

That said, the core components at the moment probably cost something like this:

M3A32-MVP Deluxe mobo: $108 (bought used)
Phenom X4 9650 @ 9950: $130
Radeon HD 4850 512MB: $190
4GB DDR2: $75
Case: $40
PSU: $90
WD SE16 640GB: $72

Prices are converted from Swedish kronor and include regular VAT as well as the EU Ripoff Tax that applies to all purchases in Europe. Those are the prices when I bought the components – I bought the hard drive about one year ago, the videocard when the 4800-series launched last summer and the CPU in september (was running an Athlon X2 before that). I was also running 2GB of RAM until fairly recently and just added another two 1GB sticks when I needed more RAM.

My current systenn will probably last for all of 2009. Then I might get a faster CPU and maybe a DX10 videocard. Hopefully while keeping all the other components the same.

right about $500 athlon x25400+be, biostar tforce mAtx, 2gb corsair xm2,MSI 8600GTS OC, recycled WD 40gb /segate 250gb, sony dvd burner, overkill TT BT, recycled a case i had. Free microsoft wireless mouse free dell keyboard. FREE XP pro : ) originally it had a x2 4600 but i got a 5400 for free, havnt really upgraded since i made it about 2 years ago.

I spent about $750 originally on my current rig 2 years ago.
Pentium Dual-Core e2160
DFI Blood-Iron P35 Mobo
2(upgraded to 4)GB DDR2-800 RAM
80GB(upgraded to 250)HDD
Radeon 3850 512MB IceQ3
Cooler Master Hyper TX2 Cooler

I've spent about $120 in upgrades since then. It's done alright for me. I'm actually looking to do a major upgrade, about $500, fairly soon. Replace the monitor, speakers, processor, gfx card...

I'm in the process of building my new gaming rig. I already got my CPU,PSU,HD and GPU. It will cost me around $1200 not including peripherals.

Current System Build:
DFI Lanparty nForce4 SLI-DR motherboard - $125 eBay, 2005
AMD Athlon64 4000+ CPU - $40 Newegg, 2007
4 gigs PC3200 RAM - pulled from dead systems
XG Quantum ATX case - $80 ebay, 2005
Radeon X1600Pro - free from a friend
Radeon X1300 - free from a friend
Seagate 400 gig HD - $100 black friday sale, 2006
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Platinum - $80 Creative, 2008
2 x 21" Dell CRT Monitors - $10 each Boeing Surplus, 2006
Bose speakers - free from a friend
BluRay/HDDVD/DVDRW drive - $100 Frys, 2008
Logitech Elite keyboard - $60 Best Buy, 2003
Mi laser mouse - $25 Frys, 2007
Apevia Powersupply - $25 Newegg, 2009

Total: $655 spread over 6 years

My next system build will be a much smaller machine; I'm waiting for the DFI LANParty JR 790GX-M3H5 mATX motherboard to be released. I'll probably buy a PhenomII 720, Radeon 4850, a Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme heatsink, and 4 gigs of DDR3-1600 RAM. I'll be recycling an mATX case, 500W powersupply, my X-Fi Platinum soundcard, my BR/HDDVD drive, and all other essentials.

I spend about 1500 per computer from my wife and I. I build my own and for this amount my wife and I always have great gaming rigs, we replace them about every 3 years on a staggered schedule. I tend to spend the most on VGAs but the CPU and MB together generally come close to the VGA amount. We also spend a premium on cooling, we live in the tropics with out air conditioning so we spend extra on cooling so we can do all day game sessions in the summer.

I spent about $5,000 on my current system, it includes 8GB of low-voltage DDR2 FB-DIMMS, two L5410 quad-core Xeons, also low-voltage, GTX285, 30" Dell 3007WFPHC monitor, and a three disk RAID0 hard drive setup, all of this running with Vista Ultimate x64...

My desktop is kinda a running project, I like to play with different hardware combos and learn the ins and outs of different chipsets and what not so here goes;
It began as
AMD 3000+, ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, GEIL 2x512MB DDR 3200, BFG 6600GT-OC 256MB, Thermaltake Kandalf, Antec Neo 480, Seagate 7200.9 200GBx2, Sony-Dell Trinitron 19.8" CRT (yes it was huge and as heavy as a 32" CRT TV, but 1880x1440 in 2005 was sweet!), Zalman cnps9500Cu, Logitech G15 KB, Razer Diamondback mouse, Logitech Z-5500 speakers
Then it moved too->
AMD FX-60, OCZ Platinum Rev.2 2x1GB DDR3200 @2-3-2-5, Antec Earthwatts 550 (added H2O to the Neo480, , it blew up 🙁 ), Seagate 7200.10 320GB, Kandalf side panel w/25cm or 250mm fan, BFG 7900GTX 512MB (followed shortly thereafter by a BFG 8800GTX 768MB), LG1970HR 4:3 19" viewable 2ms actual response with actual 1600:1 Blk-Blk contrast ratio (the trinitron finally died after almost 8 years as a drafting monitor and then 2 as my desktop, clear till the day it died, me thinks the power supply gave out), Sound blaster X-fi Xtreme gamer 128MB(too many Xes) .
Now it is;
Intel E6750 @3.3 or so, ASUS Maximus Formula, Kingston Hyper X 2x2GB DDR2 @5-5-5-12 PC2 8500, added a thermaltake power express 450watt GPU PSU in one of my 5.25 bays, Seagate 7200.11 500GB, WD 1TB Caviar Black, Samsung T260 25.5" viewable (guess T260 was catchier than T255 go figure), Vantec Nexstar3 3.5" HDD enclosure, Thermalright Ultra 120 extreme w/Panaflo 120mmx38mm 105CFM fan, Sapphire 4850x2 2GB DDR3 in 3 way crossfireX w/ Sapphire 4870 toxic 1GB DDR5 (almost sounds dirty, I'll have to try saying that to the GF, maybe not she might leave me!). I know that under 3 way Crossfire the 4870 is mostly wasted but it is my primary display controller due to some quirkiness with the 4850x2, upon rebooting my screen stays blank till the video drivers are loaded in windows with the 4850x2 as display controller. Would have gotten a 4850 1 GB but I happened to have a 4870 kickin around and said the hell with it.
As near as I can figure all this gear together bought new is as near as makes no difference $10,000CDN. but this has been a running build for 4 years come this August so it isn't too ridiculous for a constant top tier gaming rig, plus the shopping, building and buying is half the fun!

My laptop is an LG P300 CDN. version;
Intel T8300 @2.4GHZ 3MBcache, upgraded to 4GB of Patriot DDR2 6400 @ 5-5-5-15, 250GB Matsushita 5400RPM (not as slow as you would think really), Nvidia dedicated 8600GS 512MB 256MB frame buffer, 13.3" viewable LED backlit display @1280x800, best part is it weighs less than a Macbook air with the SSD I have in the mail installed, currently it weighs 1.67KG or for the yanks 3.67 lbs., it came with an external 20x DVD/RW Drive as well.
Cost me 1920.?? tax. included @ Futureshop (Canadian best buy effectively, same company) on March 10th 2008. Now I want a LG P310 with Centrino2 a P9600 and a dedicated Nvidia 9600GT with 512MB and likewise Frame buffer.

I got my current P4 from my parents, but I'm buying and building the next one myself, and plan to spend 800€ max.
