I just dropped $1751 on my new PC.

Antec 1200 Case
650W (80 Plus) PS
ATI HD 4870 2GB
5 x WD 640GB 7200RPM HD (RAID 5 Array - 2.44TB)
4GB DDR3-1600
AMD Phenom-II 955 (4 x 3.2GHz)
Asus M4A79T Deluxe Mobo
24" LCD + 18.5" LCD
22X DVD-RW
MS Keyboard/Mouse

The one I'm on right now is built for free from a bunch of spare parts from school. (shhhh!)
My main rig was put together for about $800, though it's nothing special by any means.

$1270 for a HP D5000T ATX with Q9450, Vista 32bit, 4GB ram, 500GB WD Caviar, 2 DVD drives, 8500GT. Added for $425 a PNY XLR8 8800GT, 2 WD 1TB WD Caviar, LG Blu-ray drive. Going to Windows 7 upgrade pre-ordered for $49 or full version and dual boot, 8GB 0CZ 1.8V PC28500 $148 at Newegg. I was told my mobo can't run DDR3 and 1.8V is the stock voltage of my current ram so this is the fastest ram it would run with same timings and voltage of my OEM ram. External hardware, 4 WD 1TB a dvd drive. Monitor, Hannspree HF289H, A Samsung BD-UP5000 Blu-ray & HD DVD player that i use to watch HD media on discs.

Over the course of 3 months:
$1315 for Dell's base T3500 brand new - 1GB DDR3, 80GB hd, DVD-ROM, nvidia quadro nvs 290
$265 for 12GB DDR3 from Crucial
$110 for eVGA 8800GTS 512
$130 for LG Blu-Ray (read) DVD+-RW
$1600 for 4 Intel x-25e 32GB, setup in raid 0 ...this made the piggy bank not too happy.

$3420 Total... i almost cried, a tear tried to jump out my eye.

of course I'll be adding Windows 7 Pro x64 as the RC is great on the system. Hopefully it'll be around $250 or less for OEM copy

$1600 for an HP HDX18 built to spec with a Q9000 processor and 4GB DDR3 memory. This was to replace a 5 yr old laptop and I'm hoping I won't have to buy another for some time now.

Laptop: Around $750 for a "scratch and dent" Dell Studio XPS 13 that was really in perfect shape. Normal price would have been more like $1300

On the desktops: I've lost track!
There's the Alienware that now lives inside an Antec case, the homebuild that now lives in the Alienware case and of course, the half-built system that needs a case and a couple other things to be a complete machine. I plan on buying a Win7 family pack and using them all for one purpose or another.

Original cost was $1500, then the extra HDD ($160), and the 24'' monitor ($200). So far it's costed almost $1900.

I might be getting a 1000w Corsair PSU to replace the 750w and another GTX 295 for an upgrade ($730). So then it'll be up to $2630, it's quite a bit...but soo worth it.

Total including shipping was $2468.21

I built it myself back in Febuary.
3 500GB Seagate SATAII HDD
1 SCEPTRE X24WG-1080P Black 24" 2ms Widescreen
1 XCLIO GREATPOWER 1200W PSU
1 Thermaltake SwordM VD500LBNA Black/ Silver Aluminum Extrusion ATX Full Tower Liquid Cooling Computer Case
1 SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 4870 X2 2GB
1 Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 64-bit
1 Patriot Viper 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
1 ASUS P6T LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard
1 Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz (OC'd to 4.21GHz)

i would say 800$ for the tower only

Intel Quad Core Q6600
Gigabyte crossfire Motherboard
6 Gig DDR 1066
Radeon 4870
Sound Blaster Audigy
NXTZ Case

So far as built, my CAD/Sketchup system has cost $1200.

Specs:
Core i7 920
CoolerMaster V8 cooler
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P motherboard
6GB DDR3 1333
(2x) XFX GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB in SLI
Corsair 750W PSU
WD 80GB SATA II
LiteON CD/DVD burner
CoolerMaster ATCS 840

Of course, I'm not even done yet 😀

Soon to add/remove:
add (2x) 150GB 10,000 RPM SATA HDD's in RAID0
add (2x) 1TB HDD in RAID5 (primary backup)
add EFI-X http://www.efi-x.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=134&language=English
install OSX

Which brings total cost to around $2300, which is cheaper than a Mac Pro, and still runs a retail copy of OSX that can actually by updated!

Sorry for long post

1 year ago I selected all the parts and 'compiled' my PC as follows;

AMD Phenom 9550
4 GBram
75 GB Raptor + 200 GB HDDs
nVidia 8500GT
SamSung 24.5" monitor
Samsung DVD + DVDRW
PhilipsToUcam 740
Medion keyboard + mouse
(OpenSuSE 11.1 KDE 4.2.2)

Total 2008 Euro 1.196,= (~$1,698.=)

I try to make it last more than 3 years. Built one last year for about $2000. Antec Sonata III case, Earthwatts 750 PSU, ASUS P5E X48 Mobo, Intel 8400, 4GB Corsair DDR3 1066, 1 x 1TB Seagate, 2 x 500GB Seagate, 8800GT, fancy low noise coolers for CPU and GPU, 22" Samsung 2032GW, Logitech speakers, keyboard and mouse

Built in 2005 upgraded along the way. Originally was about 2800(new everything), have put about 1000 into it over the last 4 years.

Dual Opteron 280 (Orig 2x 244)
4GB ECC RAM (Orig 2GB)
260GTX (6600GT to 7950GT)
24" Dell 2408 (Orig 2005FPW - Yay for Dual screens)
9550SX PCI-X Hardware Raid 5 Controller
4x Raptors ~200GB (Orig) RAID5
4x Storage ~900GB (Added) RAID5
Case/PSU/Fans/Heatsinks/DriveCages/DVD-RW/etc also

Still a very solid system. As it stands very few of the applications I currently use are able to fully load the system, generally that's my cue to start looking for a replacement.

Hard to put a price on mine, I update it from time to time. But with todays prices - it would cost about $700
Core2Quad 9x00 (going with todays CPUs, mine is a 6600)
P35 Gigabyte board
2GB RAM
1TB HD
ATI 4670 card
Antec Solo case
450watt PSU ($60)

Compared to a Power mac at $2500, you get get a lot of PC.

With an AMD X3 CPU($100), Mobo with CF($110, 4GB RAM($25), ATI 4850 card{$100) (With DX11 coming in soon, don't spend to much on todays cards) 1TB HD ($100) + good case and PSU $200 + $100 for OS =
$800 (Rough total after mouse + keyboard + speakers)
$450 = Samsung 26" LCD monitor with HD-Tuner for 1080p.
------------
$1250 (Add $200~250 for a Corei7)

Instead of build my latest upgrade myself I customized one from IBuyPower.com and it cost me $980 but I added 2 WD 500gb SATA2 HDDs that were about $100 a piece, an Nvidia 8600GTS OC that was about $350 and a cooler for it that was $30, Two dvd drives for about $50 a piece, and an Enermax Liberty 500W psu that was probably about $100 or so.

Total Price of the Tower: $1,688

For my external stuffhere it is:
Klipsch 2.1 sound system: $150
Logitech G7 Laser Mouse: $70
Logitech Elite Keyboard: $50
Dell 21" Widescreen LCD: $500

Total Price: $2,458
