I just finished my new build. It cost about $1500 normally. I got a good price on the motherboard and processor so i got it for just under $1200 for just the tower.

My little brother's computer cost around $350 for the tower; $570 for the widescreen and peripherals. I hooked up my old 8600 GTS to it to cut the cost.

The first one I got was around $1600 - a C2D around 2 yrs ago when they came out. The second was was a year after that and around $900. They are both self-built.

As for mine, it's a mix of new and old, and is constantly changing. It cost me about $350 for the tower and rough components, $100 for the speakers, $180 for the E8400 CPU, $170 for the ATI 4850 card later on, $260 for the screen, and $60 for the Seagate drive. I bought each part at a different time, based on whatever I wanted more of, but I probably dumped over $1000 into it over the years.

[citation][nom]spanky deluxe[/nom]I spent enough on my computer to make my penis appear larger. I also bought some go faster stripes to stick on the side of my car and bought a three wolf and moon t-shirt to maximise my pulling power. Not really the best QOTD since not a single comment poster will care in the slightest what other people put...[/citation]

It's possible that Tom's Hardware will use this poll to do some statistical research (e.g., average price, uppper / lower limits, other stats stuff). So not really that bad a question - just not one that'll provoke any in-depth discussion. And I can't remember exactly, but I think my current build was somewhere around $1000 for:

Antec 900 Case
Asus P5Q-PRO Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
ATI Radeon HD 4850
4 GB Corsair DDR2 800
500 GB Seagate HD
Logitech G11 Keys
Logitech G9 Laser Mouse
Samsung SyncMaster 710n

$1500 for the computer, $1000 for two 24" monitors with respective desk-mounted arms. Cheapest monitors and arms I could find :\

Payed 300 for my Athlon XP2600, + 512Mb Ram + case & 350W powersupply; later upgraded with a Radeon 9500 card for an additional 275.
Only later I upgraded to 1GB RAM DDR2 (80).
During the course of a year I spend about $600 on harddrives, especially those of Maxtor seemed to crash in my case, mostly because of the heat inside the box.
That's where I opened my case and altered the cooling.
Air was sucked in from the drive bay, passed the HD's, to the CPU.
from the bottom air passed the graphics card to the CPU, where it was sucked out by the powersupply, and ejected upward.

My computers before that where given by my dad.

Later I bought my first $800 Sony Vaio. It supposed to be a VGN-C140G, on 60% off, but they shipped me a VGN-C190G. I did not complain, and the newer type was slightly better!
It did have a slight discoloration in the screen though.

My girl bought her laptop $1000,Sony Vaio, next gen. of mine. Both where C2duo's with 2Gig ram.
hers 2Ghz, mine 1,6Ghz.
She also has a 200Gig HD, while I only have a 120Gig HD.

The monster has held strong for over 3 years now.

I also bought an Acer EeePc 701 for 275 (+25 customs/import taxes).

So it's pretty hard to say how much I bought my pc's; since most of the time I'd be upgrading my older gear.
At this moment I only own my Vaio laptop. When finances go better, we might buy ourselves a Phenom II desktop, depending on what is cheaper, I might build it from parts; to play some older games on (in the likes of wow).
The specifications might differ with time, but if I'd be buying a new PC, it'd be a Phenom 2, with 4Gig Ram, Win7, and a radeon 4770,4670, or 4850.

I'm also thinking about an atom platform as hardware router and fileserver. It's good on electricity, can download bittorrent with ease, and rout external HD's to my wireless router.
That should costme no more than $300 to $500 for perhaps the ion platform.
The ion platform will (hopefully) perform better than my Sony Vaio laptop to game on.
With a lower cpu, but better graphics card...

Mine was a $500 netbox first.I have changed the mobo with one of larger onboard video ($100). Went for a htpc then and spent 130 on a silent 9600gt oc. I fall for gaming and spend another $500 to buy new cpu, mobo, ram, hdd and got a better 2.1 as a bonus.

Finally I couldn't resist trying a new Radeon 4770 for $130. I have spent $1250 on a modest, green gaming rig that gets 6300 3dmarks of vantage.

I spent $1,130.92 to build my fifth upgrade, including a new HAF 932 case. I'm still waiting on the Mobo to come back repaired by Asus, a P6T Deluxe V2. The Corsair 850TX PSU also failed within the first 10 minutes. That came back last week. The third one, by the way. Sheesh.

[citation][nom]soldier37[/nom]I upgrade components every 2 years, the video card every year and a half now. So overall right now as it stands I would say $3000. Just went quad core and Vista 64 bit. About to upgrade my ATI 4870 1gb to a 5800 series this fall and Windows 7. So theres another $500+ right there. LOL[/citation]

Can you sell me your old, outdated 4870? That'll be a nice upgrade from my 7800GT.

I recently had to replace my broken Toshiba laptop a in hurry at a time when money was/is tight, so no $1500 or more machines this time around.
A Toshiba Satillite A505 S6960 for $679 hit the spot just right. The only thing it lacked was Bluetooth and a larger HD would have been nicer. But I already had a new 500G HD and a Bluetooth from my other laptop so no problem.

$1200 ish for the desktop, monitor, speakers, and printer (3 years ago, big overhaul/upgrade) plus around $150-$200 on upgrades since then (graphics card and more HDD space).

Then a $1000 convertable laptop/tablet (touch screen + pen) for my university classes and some art for fun

I built a new desktop about 5 months ago, Q9400 at 3.4GHz, 4GB ram, WinXP, but with a mundane graphics system, for about $800.

I bought a new Dell Latitude laptop 2.53GHz in December from the outlet for about $1000.

My 5 year old laptop was a gift so I don't know what it cost.
