Well, after owning an Athlon 64 4000 2x for a couple of year (with an 1800 Athlon with a powercolor 9600pro for 4 or 5 years before that) I was really ready for a big step. The release of the i7 was all the extra motivation I needed to build a new box. Built in March of this year, I have an i7 920 on an ASUS P6T Deluxe with 6GB 1333 DDR3, Gainward GTX 285, Coolermaster CM690 case, new 24inch LG L246WHX WS LCD, new 20x D/L DVD burner. I don't have the receipts at hand, but at the time, the total cost was around $2200.00 Australian, so about $1800US. Expensive . . . yes. but I have absolutely no complaints. This along with the public beta and RC availability of Windows 7 have made me a very happy PC user this year! 😉

Laptop: Sony Vaio Z21 2000 euros
Core 2 duo @ 2.53
4GB DDR3
256 SSD
GeForce 9300
13.1"

Desktop: Custom made I change Parts depenting on my current needs
current state
CPU:E7300
GPU:9800GT
Ram:8GB @ 800Mhz
HDD:2 x500GB
Intel mobo DG43TF no overclocking
LG 22" Monitor
Less than 700 euros

€3000 for the desktop (including all the peripherals I bought), over €2000 on my now 2 year old laptop and nearly €2000 for my brother's recently acquired laptop and we both paid nearly €600 for our PDAs.

i spent about 700 not including the monitor.
runs everything saves for Crysis in maxxed out settings very smoothly. can't do that on a Mac

My last rig was done about the time I7 was released, it cost me about 1800.00$. I also purchased a Mac Book for around 1700.00 $. In the last few years I have built rigs for other people and typically it cost around 1000.00 $ give or take a 100$.

Just over $1800 for the tower.
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz E6850
4 GB DDR3 1333
Geforce 8800GT 512MB
800watt PSU
1x 150GB WD Raptor
1x OCZ 32GB SSD for Windows
Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 case
Vista Ultimate 64-bit (Yes, I preordered Windows 7)

Not included in the cost of the tower are two 22" x223w monitors and dual monitor stand I bought later.

It's just over a year old (March 2008). I'll be getting a new one in a year or two, waiting mostly for USB 3.0 and SATA3, plus I'd like SSD's to come down in price some. Sadly, my 32 GB isn't big enough for Vista (don't even have SP2 yet because I'm out of room).

I think I have about $850 into my system. I have always built my own rigs, and I like to build a new one about every 3 years or so.
My current rug is a Q9550 Core2 Quad, Gigabyte P45 Motherboard with 4g of Ram, GTX260 vid card, 640G hd, DVD burner ETC......

My personal opinion is that the quality of the separate components that you buy will always be better that the ones that make up the store bought systems, also you get a better Bios not some stripped down minimal get it out the door Bios.

I'm not sure I can answer this question. I started with a $1500 machine back in 03 , Then placed it in a bigger case ($150). I then did a complete rebuild in 04-05 for around $1000. I have been upgrading and swapping parts for a long time now. I would put the system in the $800-$1000 range

- I have my $1000 desktop that I just built 6 months ago. It's a Q6600 with 4G of ram an 8800GT
- My old desktop which I spent $1000 on in like 2004 is now a linux box, I probbably spent about $500-$800 upgrading it over the years. It went through 4 graphics cards. It started with 512K of RAM, it now has 2G.
- My server which cost $100 new (it's a VIA C3 box)
- My $1000 laptop, which I bought in 2005 or so. I bought i refurbished, so it was really worth about $1600. It's a 15.4" AMD Athlon 64 3000+ system with a Mobile Radeon 9600. It recently completely fell apart (the LCD hinge completely broke off)
- My car computer which I spent about $1000 on. It was a Geode NX system, but I recently replaced it with an Atom.
- I just got a laptop to replace my broken one. I got an off-lease IBM T43 this time. It was only $350, plus I spent another $100 upgrading the RAM and the hard drive. It's in the netbook price range with better performance, keyboard; plus it's got IBM quality--the thing is built like a tank and is absolutely beautiful.

I also have various parts laying around the house from different upgrades and such. I'm pretty sure I could build another computer with those (minus the case).

It has been for me about 16 years of continual upgrades.
Starting with my very first PC, wich was about $1200, then I spend anywhere from $350-$500 ($500 is my limit for an upgrade session) about every year to year and a half. This was really a one sided question to be asking on an enthusiast site. They will spend far more money on their PC than an average user, or a corporate account will. Then they even go to the point of bragging, even stretching the truth slightly to give that "look how much I spent, mine must be better than yours" impression.
Lots of replies I see even went to the trouble to post all their parts, and what they spent the money on exactly. Like I said, a pretty bias question to be asking around here!

$500 for my budget gaming box.

Just goes to show that PC gaming does not have to be expensive at all.
Overclocked 9600GT gets 50-60fps in COD4. So I'm good.

I see that my last system, in the end of 2006, cost me a little over $1000 in parts, however there is a higher sales tax here in Denmark(so could most likely make it a $650 build in the US at the time). Got a nice notebook at around the same price, but at half the price I would have payed for a reasonable Macbook here.

More as 4000.- Usd, self build, try to update every couple of month, I think my budget per year sums up to 5000.-over....I know that's crazy, but that's one of my hobbies....so always the best to use...which some can get for 50% of the price in half a year...I know, I know..hahaha..who cares!!!

I recently got a budget machine for my programming needs. It will serve as a gaming rig too at a later time. The current one costed me around 460 $ US
