Quest problem revisited

Hi, I'm reposting a request for help from a month or so ago as I am still up
a creek on it. Any help gratefully appreciated.

I'm having problems with three separate quests.
The first is for the fighters guild, the second is for the house Redoran,
and the final and most annoying one is a Redoran Horator quest.
All three involve rescuing NPC's and I completed them easily but when I
return with the character's they are not recognised by the ones who sent me
on the rescue mission's.
What all three have in common is the fact that when I find them and ask them
to accompany me they say "Ok, I will wait here" so I have to tell them to
wait and then they follow me.
It's incredibly annoying in the case of the Horator quest as it looks like
its going to stop me completing the game.
Any idea's folks?

I'm just going to work on the assumption that the problem is in the game,
not the chair. Sure looks like your game's pooched. You could try
resetting your balky NPCs in the console. That might help, but I doubt it -
the widespread "wait here" problem you describe is probably terminal.

Is it a bad save game? You can start a new quickie fighter character, try
another 'drag the guy home' quest, and see if the problem persists. (Just
North of Pelagiad are a couple of creepy weirdos studying Kagouti mating
habits - a good nearby follow-the-leader quest check.) If it does mess up,
then it's the game, and not a bad save. Then you'll want to trash any mods
that affect the AI (move mod, companion mods, etc) and do it again to see if
it's mods messing with your NPC's heads. If it still won't work, or
ditching the mods screws the game, you'll have to re-install. *shudder* to
get rid of the problem.

I seem to recall reading here once or twice that you can set a quest flag to
done so the questgiver will reward you and you can get on with the game, but
you'll have to ask someone else how to do that, or look around online. The
good news is that there aren't too many "drag this guy back here" missions
in the MQ. If you get this lot sorted out, you won't have to worry about
doing it every other job. The bad news is that you could be resetting flags
until you're sick of the game outside the MQ.

If you don't get it figured, then I highly reccomend selling everything you
own, buying all the hand-to-hand training you can afford, and then giving
the wayward travellers a jolly good bare-knuckle beating to death before
starting over from scratch. It won't help your game at all, but it will
give you a nice bit of satisfaction out of the whole mess. While you're at
it, beat the quest-givers to death too. And their neighbors. And some of
those snooty Redorans. Best leave the fighters be though - they don't run
away screaming like schoolchildren. They'll just haul out a bloody great
axe or sword and mince you but good. There's not much satisfaction in that.

Alternately, you could lead the buggers into Badass Dungeon, and let the
critters eat them - it's all good.

Yes, that can be done, as long as you are playing on a PC. Basically, you have
to open the Console and enter "journal <quest_id> <value>".
In order to find out <quest_id> and <value>, either search this newsgroup for
the "How to clean up your journal" thread which I posted a few months ago,
or be a bit more specific about who gave you a quest to rescue whom. If you do
the latter, I'll post the Console commands needed for ending the quests.

Hi Bjorn,
Sorry for delay in getting back to you but this was unavoidable.
Hope this is the info you require to enable me to continue with Morrowind. I
deliberately held back on the main game quest and concentrated on other
aspects of the game and the thought of repeating many months of playing and
often just wandering after starting the game again is a real sickener.

1. This is the only vital one. It is part of the Redoran Hortator quest.
Before he will persuade the other Redoran councillors to support me Athyn
Sarethi asks me to rescue his son Varvur from Venim Manor.I do this and lead
Varvur back to his father but Athyin doesn't recognise his son.

2. This also involves Athyn Sarethi. After rescuing Delyna Mandas she asks
me to return a locket to her father Arethan Mandas. She does not know where
he is but tells me to ask his friend Athyn Sarethi. When I talk to Athyn
there is no option to discuss Arethan or the locket.

3. This one is a fighters guild quest. I am sent to Dissapla mine, west of
Tel Aruhn. There, Novor Drethan asks me to rescue Teres Arothan from the
mine which is overrun with Nixhounds. I rescue him and return him to Novor
Drethan but he is not recognised.

4. A House Redoran quest. Neminda asks me to find a trader called Mathis
Dalobar last seen heading to Maar Gan. I find him and take him to the temple
at Maar Gan but he doesn't realize we are there and continues to ask me to
take him to the temple.

I look forward to hearing from you and any help with these problems would be
very much appreciated.

Thanks

Console Commands for ending specified quests following:

> 1. This is the only vital one. It is part of the Redoran Hortator quest.
> Before he will persuade the other Redoran councillors to support me Athyn
> Sarethi asks me to rescue his son Varvur from Venim Manor.I do this and lead

This quest would normally be ended by talking to Athyn Sarethi again.
If he doesn't say anything new when talking about "Varvur Sarethi", open
the Console by pressing ^ (above Tab and under Esc)^, left-click on Varvur
Sarethi (the Console title should read "varvur sarethi" or similar) and
enter the following lines:
AddItem extravagant_belt_01 1
AddItem extravagant_pants_01 1
AddItem extravagant_shirt_01_r 1
AddItem extravagant_shoes_01 1
set followNow to 0
PositionCell 1500 510 -100 180 "Ald-ruhn, Sarethi Guard Quarters"
Set "athyn sarethi".varvurMoved to 1
Journal HR_RescueSarethi 70

The Additem lines give him new clothes, set followNow causes him to stop
following you and PositionCell moves him to his room. Normally this should
be done automatically, but I suspect, that Varvur's script got broken.
Setting the varvurMoved variable on Athyn tells him, that his son is safe
in his room and finally, the Journal line ends the escorting part of the
mission. Talk to Athyn Sarethi again for your reward.

> 2. This also involves Athyn Sarethi. After rescuing Delyna Mandas she asks

In order to receive that topic, you should have resolved the smuggler
situation in Shurinbaal (one of Sarethi's quests for Redoran Members).
I guess that you triggered this quest by "accidentally" rescuing Delyna, so
that the intended quest structure is broken. I'll give you a spoiler:
His grief has made Arethan Mandas become an outlaw. He and his followers
live in Milk (due west of Ald'Ruhn). Go there and return the amulet to him.

Novor Drethan should give you the reward when talking about "Dissapla Mine".
If he doesn't, enter the following line into the Console and address that
topic again:
Journal FG_DissapleMine 70

> 4. A House Redoran quest. Neminda asks me to find a trader called Mathis
> Dalobar last seen heading to Maar Gan. I find him and take him to the temple
> at Maar Gan but he doesn't realize we are there and continues to ask me to

Have you taken him inside the temple? If you did and he still doesn't recognize
that he is safe, open the Console, click on him (the Console title should read
mathis arobar or something similiar) and enter the following lines:
Journal HR_FindDalobar 70
set followNow to 0

The first line ends the quest, the second line causes Mathis to stop following
you. Report back to Neminda for your reward.

Hi Bjorn,
Did as you said re the console commands for the Hortator quest and it sort
of worked and I was able to go on and complete the main game quest.
There were one or two problems entering some of the lines though.
The following commands were accepted.

set followNow to 0
PositionCell 1500 510 -100 180 "Ald-ruhn, Sarethi Guard Quarters"
Journal HR_RescueSarethi 70

These were not.

AddItem extravagant_belt_01 1
AddItem extravagant_pants_01 1
AddItem extravagant_shirt_01_r 1
AddItem extravagant_shoes_01 1
Set "athyn sarethi".varvurMoved to 1

When I put in the commands it said:

Script varvurSarethiScript Item extravagent_belt_01 was not found on line 1.
Compiled script not saved!

The same for the other items of clothing.
And:

Script athynSarethiScript could not find variable "athyn Sarethi00000000."
on line 1.

I don't know if it is related but since then when I ask Athyn Sarethi for
House Redoran duties he says "Thanks for rescuing my son. Let me think about
it and come back in a couple of days."
When I go back he always repeats the same thing.
Dont know if you can help me on this one also?
Either way many thanks for the help with the main quest.
Cheers

Those are the most important commands. Varvur stops following you, is
moved to his room and your journal is updated.

> These were not.
>
> AddItem extravagant_belt_01 1
> AddItem extravagant_pants_01 1

Those commands aren't that important. Without them, Varvur doesn't get new
clothes.

That is what we need the varvurMoved variable for. Athyn will only give you
the next quest when he knows that his son is safe and sound in his quarters.
Let's give it another try: Open the Console, left-click on Athyn Sarethi
(the Console title should show his name) and enter:
Set varvurMoved to 1
Close the Console and talk about duties again.

If it doesn't work, you'll have to use the Console on Athyn Sarethi again.
Make sure that the Console title reads "Athyn Sarethi" or similar and enter:
AddTopic "Bralen Carvaren"
Using capital letters isn't technically necessary, it only improves readability
for you. Athyn Sarethi would comment this with:
"You have rescued my son, and I am grateful, but there is another favor I would
ask of you. Varvur Sarethi has been accused of the foul murder of Bralen
Carvaren."
So talk about "Bralen Carvaren" to get the next quest.

Hope it works!
