1) Has anyone ever managed to complete the quest to kill Hotzenplotz
with a 10th level character or is it, like the Pyramid, something you
should wait a while before attempting?

2) How many rat/giant rat corpses does it usually take to tame a cave
lion/wild cat?

3) How common are Scrolls Of Balance?

4) Are herb seeds useful for anything if I don't have Gardening?

Depends on your class and equipment. It's entirely possible to kill
Hotzenplotz and friends at level one as a spellcaster (indeed, doing so
was part of my starting out process for wizards before learning the
disadvantages of leveling so quickly). I imagine archers would be the
same. Melee-orientated classes are much better to hold off, having lost
two promising level 10s to trying to take him. The man himself is quite
fearsome for a low level character in melee. Now if you have some nice
wands, though...

All I could tell you :)

Depends a LOT on the character - you can even do it before level 10,
without having been assigned the quest, and still get the reward. A
decent ranged attack, either spells or missiles, is required. Both the
crime lord and his bouncers hit hard in melee, and the crime lord has
a nasty poison attack too.

You can eat them if you are desperate, sell them in shops for money,
and IIRC they can be given to farmers for a lawful boost.

Don't know, I tried it once or twice, but I never had the needed
quantities of rats to tame more than one cat (I don't like being
burdened). Just lock cats in a room, be faster than them or use
ventriloquism to confuse them.

0.08681% of the items generated on danger level one will be a scroll of
balance. Quite few. Just in comparison that's half as often as a scroll of
light or a quarter as often as a broadsword. Note that the creation
probability decreases when the danger level increases (going down a
dungeon).

You can manage on level one with a spellcaster.

Wild cats: Very few. Cave lion: not sure if it's possible at all.

> 3) How common are Scrolls Of Balance?

Pretty uncommon.

> 4) Are herb seeds useful for anything if I don't have Gardening?

Not really. Of course you can eat, sell or sac them etc.

I have, with elementalists (3 or 4 zaps of Frost Bolt, and he is dead).
However, I usually do this when I'm level 14, when I want to go to level
15 to get Improved Fireball - so it's easier to do Pyramid.

No, with a level 6-7 wizard it is quite easy.

One for cats, i don't know for lions...

The answers are a bit spoily...

Me. Multiple times with wizards and a Magic Missile spell,
and recently with an archer. However all the wizards had willpower
trained with herbs to at least 25, and the archer had a single
arrow of slaying, which he had to use to finish the job. Generally
I would advise to wait a while, like with the Pyramid.

one or two if they are not cursed. More if the animal is experienced.
Monsters in cavernous levels, vaults and tensions rooms generally are
more experienced then usual. You most probably can't tame anything in
the arena.

> 3) How common are Scrolls Of Balance?
Not very. :)

> 4) Are herb seeds useful for anything if I don't have Gardening?
Sell them, eat them, give them to farmers, or kill wildcats by throwing
herb seeds at them[1]. They are not of a much use even if you have
Gardening. I used them once or twice in my entire adom carrier. They
are just too rare. With low Gardening you waste them. And you can't
train Gardening because there are not enough seeds available.

Usually, yes. There are some exceptions, though. A spellcaster with a good
start can give it a go earlier. A missile specialist with on-demand
teleportation can too. A mindcrafter can confuse, run, shoot, confuse, run,
shoot and beat him fairly early as well. I say this from experience.

If you like precrownings based on live sacrifices and you don't like or can't
use the other method (methods? can't remember -- I only use this one) of
getting an Amulet of Order to get Lawful to convert neutral altars into the
more-convenient Lawful type, then killing him early is really nice.

Too many for it to be very convenient.

> 3) How common are Scrolls Of Balance?

Not especially common.

> 4) Are herb seeds useful for anything if I don't have Gardening?

- Eat them, for a piddling amount of nutrition
- Sell them
- Use them as a missile weapon
- Use them as a melee weapon (You hit Keriax with an herb seed! Keriax is
confused! Keriax roars "WTF??" You hit Keriax with an herb seed! Keriax is
confused! You hit Keriax with an herb seed! Keriax dies...)

it is; three might already do the trick.

As many others have mentioned, it can be done at level 10 and even
before. I recently tried few characters with which I just tried to kill
all the Lawenilothehl people - Mad Doctor is surprisingly easy, and
Barnabas is nigh impossible before leveling up a lot.

I think Mindcrafter would have nice time killing Hotzenplots, Munge and
Grunge after getting Mind Bolt at level 6... Especially if he can lock
that door. 😉

I rarely tame them, but have sometimes made them neutral. That is enough
to get away, and might be even be a good way to get them out of the way
all the way.

Here, here. That's one of my favourite slaughtering sessions when I play
a mindcrafter.

Is it more difficult for cave tigers? I faintly recall one of those as
being very difficult to tame, but do not remember whether it was tigers
or lions.

Cave tigers only take raw, fresh, or fish meat, and they need a lot of
pieces at that (too many). Needless to say, pain in the ass.

I had one of my falcon-born wizards collect lots of fish meat in order
to tame a cave tiger that was blocking my way to Keethrax. It then
killed every other cat in the VD :)
