Hi Everyone,

I am looking to build my first Computer (Gaming Machine + Future Proof) I have spent lots of time researching and am nearly ready to buy.

Having read the memory guide and looked around I am still unsure so thought I would ask for clarification.

I am thinking of getting 8gb of the following:

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128014

Costing £200.

Would I be better to buy something different for the 200, possibly 4gb of better spec or does this seem like a good choice?

Many Thanks
Luke

The Q6600 has a FSB of 1066 and the memory is 667 (1333 FSB) so it is plenty to support that processor and you could OC a bit if you wish. 8 GB is a lot of memory for a gaming system and you will need a 64 bit OS to utilize it unless you intend to set up a RAMDISK with part of it.

personally id recommend faster ram with lower latencies instead of lots of ram, who needs 8 gig anyway?

Thanks for your comments,

I will be getting Vista 64. As I do some GIS I am hoping that when ESRI release a 64bit version I will be able to process huge datasets but that will likely be a few years off.

However it will be mainly games so if you think higher speed would be significantly better I will get that and think about getting more when the new software is released. Also I will most likely be getting 8800GT SLI in a few years so would that affect my decision.

EDIT- This seems very similar question to the http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/246019-12-worth-upgrading thread. The final answer is "In a word, no. The benefits are minimal unless you are shooting for a 400+ FSB overclock.
"

Is that the same for me with SLI etc. Thanks

Many Thanks
Luke

In the end I went for the 4gb 800mhz ram for £130 from crucial. Thanks David, Fire and other threads!
