Hi,

I am on the verge of completing my first custom computer build...but i seem to be having the stated above ^ problem with my computer: Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected......

Im trying to install win xp through my dvd drive but there error keeps coming up. I have a sata hard drive, an ide dvd/cd burner/reader. (lite-on). (I though I bought a sata dvd drive but when it came in it turned out to be ide, my fault, however i dont think that should effect anything). Anyways my dvd burner/reader has the black ide port/cable hooked into it and my motherboard has the blue one (so I dont think i made the common mistake) however, i still get the error. Please help me make my first computer build successful!!! OH btw I checked the bios it looks like it recognizes my hard drive and my dvd burner but still...PLEASEEEEEEEEE HEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPp

its actually on 1st priority and sata hard drive is on the third priority....However it says 4th priority is floppy drive...but I dont have a floppy drive connected.

can u specify on that...how can i set a sata drive as an ide...

In the BIOS, maybe under advanced, it will somehow state your drives(HDD, DVD, etc.) and you want them to say ide or sata...no where do you want it to say RAID...just go through the bios options and you'll see it, what board do you have? and have you moved the dvd drive sata to another connector to make sure it's not the sata controller?

First my dvd burner is using a ide cable hook up so it is automatically set to ide, and my sata hard drive plugged into a sata port is using the ide configuration, I changed my dvd burner to the grey ide port so now its a slave. But still does not help anything still get the same error.

Oh yeah and the model of the motherboard is: asus p5q se2

right now im trying to use the asus support dvd but thats not working either...he asks me to insert media in boot device and press any key to continue. and when I do press "any key" after a couple seconds the same message shows up... I ran out of ideas...There must be someone here who had this problem and got throught it...TELL ME! 😀

To boot from the DVD, you need a working DVD drive and a bootable CD or DVD disk. AFIK, the Asus support CD isn't bootable. If you insert a known to work bootable CD or DVD in the drive and the system is configured to boot from the DBD drive before the hard disk and it still doesn't try to boot from the DVD drive, then it's most likely defective. Does it ever asks you to press a key to boot from the CD or DVD?

I also just bought a Asus P5Q SE Plus and I am having the same exact issues. I used the same DVD and DVD/RW from a previous computer, so I know they work. I'm not sure why the Mobo won't let me boot Windows XP from DVD drive. Any thoughts?

problems installing vista using.

i can enter the BIOS no problems, and all the hardware is set up right.

I put a DVDRW into IDE1 and set this to boot first, my hardrive is connected to SATA1 set to second boot.

When I try to install windows after the dvd start reading I get this error.

"Reboot and select proper boot device, or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key"

However I did put my motherboard CD in and lets it boot from cd and it wants me to make a boot disk, so the cd rom is ok
However I do not have a floppy drive.

Whould you know what this is ?
I have never seen this problem before,

Please help!

It seems as if the Mobo won't recognize any sort of ATAPI drive. So depending on how old your CD/DVD drives are, your mobo won't be able to find it.

I went out to the closest MicroCenter and bought a SATA CD/DVD RW drive or $30 and a some SATA cables and the problem was fixed instantly.

If you hold Shift+F8 when you see the BIOS loading screen it will give you a list of drives that the mobo recognizes. If you don't see your IDE drives in there, then you might want to think about going to buy a SATA optical drive.

just now i bought my new pc..
same spec with u guys..
bt im using amd mobo...
my hd is sata
n my dvd rom is ide...
i too think..
the ide rom is not compitable with the new mobo..
maybe i wanna try using my sata dvd..n hopefully it can be workable =.=
i just getting tired 4 whole night trying to solve this but seem not only me face the same prob..
i hope anybody who succeed in this prob giving his xplaination how u do it ^^
really appreciate if anyone can help me too =.=

Hey dude,

the mobo does need a bios update before and IDE drive can be found and used 100%.
You can force the Boot by pressing F8 at a stage of the boot up ( if i remember it right)

you might wana think about getting a SATA drive there only 20 bucks and are well worth it

But yeah you will need to update the bios

@@@@@@@@@@@@ I have a same problem,I have 2 dvd drives and i take out one And u go in bios and set ur hard drive sata to raid And save restart

i I have a same issue, when i check in bios it shows only one dvd drive and I mounted two dvd drives than I take out one and one more one thing check ur mobo book and see a sata hard drive and here is also a mistake I change a sata to raid in bios and boot up option is dvd drive and hard drive after this save all this and restart and i think ur problem will be resolve ok..

I am having the same issue. This is a computer that I build a year ago (ASUS P5E...)
drives are SATA RAID0, DVD drive is IDE

I successfully installed Vista on this machine last year, and then Windows 7 yesterday, but had to reinstall.
After Formatting my drives, only NOW do I get this problem. It's NOT hardware related, because it all worked just fine yesterday. Only it happens with every CD EXECECPT the copy of Win7 I burned yesterday.

I'm having install issues with that copy, so I'm trying a new disk, or my old Vista disks.
NOTHING.

In summary, Vista DVD's generate this issue, new burn of Win7 generates this issue. yesterday's burn of Win 7 works fine.

I suspect a boot sector virus - or a problem with the RAID controllers after reformatting the RAID disk.

Either way, this is F*ed up.
Please god someone help!

Hey.. what do youmean about 1st priority? u mean i shud put on the dvd first before the hard drive?

Am having same problem with a p6t se, bios recognizes hhd abd cd-rom, set priority to boot 1st cd-rom, 2nd hhd. But when I try to boot from cd-rom with windows 7 or windows xp (both oems) neither will boot. Have built multiple pcs using msi and gigabyte mbs, this is my first asus and am not impressed thus far. Please help. Decoy77

I'm having a similar problem as many above. I have built several PCs before. I just installed an Asus P5G41-M Le mobo, with a new sata hard drive, and my old Memorex lightscribe CD/DVD IDE drive. I set the boot order in the bios to CD drive 1st, hard drive 2nd. I get the same prompt as others about inserting a bootable disk and pressing any key. When I insert the Windows 7 disk, I just get the same message. After reading previous posts, I tried inserting the old Windows XP disk I have. That starts installing fine. I cancelled that install, because I definitely want to go with Windows 7. Now when I restart, the blue ASUS screen flashes quickly, and then the screen goes completely black. Could the original issue be that Windows XP install disk was a CD, versus Windows 7 install disk being a DVD? If the answer is buying a new sata DVD/CD drive, why do they even put an IDE connector on the mobo? And now I have a worse problem of getting just a black screen, without even the prompt to insert a bootable disk.

I just recently began seeing this statement about rebooting and selecting the proper boot device and selecting any key. I updated my BIOS and when I rebooted, I would get this msg. In my BIOS settings under boot device priority, BIOS detected my HDD but a generic ATAPI CDROM and not my memorex dvd drive. I decided after trying numerous times trying to get BIOS to detect my dvd rom to check my master/slave settings for my drives. Don't know why but I was desperate for a solution so I'd give it a shot. I made my HDD master and dvd slave. Saved the settings, rebooted, and after POST, the screen showed my HDD then it booted to windows. That seemed to have solved my problem for whatever reason. Hope this helps as I haven't seen any other solution. Worked for me though.

Strangebrew, what version of Windows are you running? I had the same setup for master and slave, and it didn't work for me with Windows 7.

I'm running windows 7 32 bit. I'm not sure why this worked, but for some reason it did. It's actually worked for me twice as I've seen this boot msg twice. When I first built my rig about a month ago, then when I updated my BIOS recently.
