A bit of backstory:

Last year a friend purchased the Corsair K57 Wireless Gaming Bundle for a pretty decent price (was about cca $100). The bundle consists of the K57 Wireless keyboard and Corsair's Harpoon wireless mouse. The main selling point for me: when you unplug their cables, they both (the keyboard and the mouse) operate on a single USB port. For me, that's really good because when needed, I can simply switch the 1 USB port from my PC to my laptop and right away, I can continue doing stuff on my laptop with both the keyboard and mouse and I don't need to stand up and unplug the keyboard and mouse cables from the PC and plug them into the laptop. On top of that, they've been claimed to have decent performance for gaming, too.

Now, my question is: is there any other (cheaper or around the same price range) alternatives with this specific feature set (both keyboard and mouse can be wireless, but both together take up a total of 1 USB slot - I am running a bit low on USB slots on my laptop)? Has anyone tried this specific bundle (my friend says he's happy with it)? Does anyone have other ideas / recommendations?

P. S Was not sure whether this is more of a question or a discussion, so I ended up labeling it as a question.

Why not look for a USB hub for your laptop specifically? As for your USB dongle question, you might want to look into Bluetooth keyboards that can pair with your laptop's bundled Bluetooth adapter.
Because I am specifically looking for the same behavior that the Corsair bundle has. Another friend had a hub and he had trouble with it (I think some of the stuff that was connected to the hub did not work well - it worked fine when he had plugged them separately outside of the hub), so I'd like to avoid USB hubs.

EDIT: Had a talk with the friend. He had some USB Hub (not sure which) and his mouse and keyboard were not working properly with the hub (they were wireless). The mouse would skip huge portions of the screen and the keyboard wouldn't register all the keys he would press.

if your a casual gamer, any mouse will do...
if your competative, stay away from wireless (you might consider going so far as to stay away from USB also so you devices aren't sharing bandwidth). Perhaps PS2 port interface?
if its ego, i would recomment logitech g502 lightspeed mouse & logitech g915 lightspeed clicky keyboard (both can be wireless or wired)

The USB wireless thing would be just for work so that I can switch to the laptop while having both the keyboard and mouse available using 1 slot only.
While gaming, I would keep the keyboard connected using the cable, while the mouse would be wireless, so they wouldn't share the bandwidth. As for the type of gaming, it would be a mix of competitive and casual (not too much competitive).

They make keyboards with a USB you can plug the mouse into.
