Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot
devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Hi,

Check the users manual that came with your Dell recovery set. A retail disk
requires that you remove the existing system partition and create a new one
to get a clean install. The method used by Dell may vary significantly from
that, and your user manual is the best source of information.

Usually a good warning, Rick, but Dell, fyi, provides a true
installation CD.

Ok, wasn't aware of that. I had seen some complaints of Dell systems sold
w/o CD's recently, so assumed they had gone another route.

They might in the US, Bruce, but here in the UK it's a recovery disc and a
hidden partition.

That's because they know where the buying power is, so they can hold back on the smaller countries.

I've not seen any new Dells without a real installation CD, yet,
but I suppose that could change. I was pleasantly surprised a few
weeks ago to come across an HP laptop that actually had a real
installation CD, rather than the usual despicable recovery partition.

Part of the confusion might stem from the fact that the Dell OEM
installation CDs are labeled as "Operating System Recovery" disks,
even though they contain the true installation files.
