reliable and inexpensive cd-rw?

which brand should i go for when looking for a reliable and inexpensive cd-rw? 8432 iomega, creative, sony, acer or maybe ricoh? plextor is kinda expensive right here. 8432 is about US250! if i have the money, i will get plextor.

btw, is there any advantage for getting same brand of cd-rom and cd-rw? eg. having sony cd-rw and sony cd-rom in a single system.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1><EM>Edited by danielcy on 02/13/01 10:45 AM.</EM></FONT></P>

There's no difference in the brand of CD media, anyway, when you buy the recorder, have a look at the web site of the manufacturer, some manufacturers have a list of recommended media.

Instead of buying a Plextor, you could buy a Creative 8432, but looking if it is the same externally as a Plextor, I think Creative sells 2 different 8432 burners, but just one of them is manufactured by Plextor.

What do you mean there is no difference in brands of cd media? In my experience there is LOTS of difference, in sound quality, in durability, in #of bad discs/per bundle, and how well they will play on different cd players. But as to the original question, no, matching brands isn't going to matter, but using quality media is. $9.99/100 discs isn't such a good deal if they won't play in lots of cd players or only last a few months.
As for recomendations on brands, as per my post earlier on this page, my Smart and Friendly drive made by Ricoh has had tons of problems, but that seems to be contrary to most people's experience with Ricoh, and I've had lots of bad experiences with Sony products lately, and found a complete unwillingness on their part to admit that their product might have a problem, so I would recommend staying away from them. I think Plextor has developed a pretty good reputation, however.

Check out the BestBuy website. They have the Creative 12x10x32 (which I hear is really a Plextor) with 'burn Proof' technology for $179.95

I mean that usually when a brand of CD works all right with a certain recorder, it is very probably that it will work properly with the other recorders.

I also mean that if you have got a HP recorder and use HP cd media, you can get good results, but not because the recorder and the media are of the same brand, you can get good results because HP media itself is good, and you will get good results with all the other recorders no matter who has manufactured them.

The Plextor Creative is using is the 121032A, not the 8432!

I have seen boxes of the Creative 8432 with a photograph of a Plextor 8432, I am pretty sure.

I would suggest staying away from the iomega products I had a 4x version for about a year, it died and they sent me an 8x one. this made one cd and died!!
they sent me a replacement and the software (easy cd creator)
froze up and is now impossible to uninstall or completely re-install. I spent countless hours with tech- support.
I even had a guy tell me that the cd may be corrupt because it was next to a speaker!!!!!
I had to explain the fact that its not magnetic media .
basically iomega sucks, check there website support forum everyone is complaining.

whatever you do, don't fall for AOpen. They might be the cheapest around, but their product is CRAP. I had to get mine replaced, and it still doesn't work. They've been releasing firmware updates to improve "yield". If they're talking with words like that, you know something has to be wrong.

Don´t think of it as reliable, but as luck!

If you don´t have a good heatsink and fan your processor
will melt. Intel´s just stops,and after it cools down , its alive and kicking again!

I've had this Yamaha IDE 8x8x24 drive for about 4 months now. (it's model name is the 8824E on their website). I've had not *1* coaster from this thing, even when using CloneCD. I strongly recommend this drive.
