SAFELY REMOVE HARDWARE DEVICE

I installed an 8-in-1 card reader via an internal USB header. Now I always have that tray icon that says, "Safely Remove Hardware" when you hover over it.

Anyone know how to disable the tray icon without disabling the device? I hate tray icons.

I have done the same thing and also have the tray icon. It serves a pupose, right click on it, then left click on the text box and a window will surface. Click on the "Stop" button and you will get an idea of why you have a tray icon.

Basically I think it has to do with the hot-swap properties of all the readers, your system treats them as drives and wants to remind you not to remove them during mid-transfer.

No, I don't know how to remove it...don't want to.

Yeah, I have 4 extra drives now too in "my computer." My laptop does it too--with the removable DVD drive.

 

[Crashman]

Supposedly the reason it's there is that you're supposed to stop a flash device before you remove it, just to make sure it's not powered up. I don't know how to make the icon disappear.

I found 2 things:

1. You can "always hide" the icon by right clicking the taskbar and adjusting Properties/Customize...

2. Here is a program that claims to get rid of the icon, but I haven't tried it yet:
