I understand this may seem like a newbish question, but I've been doing all sorts of searches on google, HardOCP, here, etc. I think my question is so stupid that's why I'm having a hard time finding an answer.

I have this mobo:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/Motherboard/Driver_Model.aspx?ProductID=1868

and recently purchased this hard drive:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.asp?item=N82E16822136003

This is a SATA II drive, correct?

My motherboard comes with red and yellow cables. The yellow have a metal clip on each end, while the red do not. Both cables fit into the slot on the hard drive. Which do I need to use?

Also, there are 4 slots per color type on my mobo - 4 yellow, 4 red. Which slot do I plug the other end in, assuming I figure out which color is correct? lol

Sorry if this seems silly - I'm at my wit's end.

Hey Tanatz I just bought the same hard drive and I have an ASUS A8N-SLI NForce 4 Deluxe motherboard with the red Serial ATA cables. I do not believe you should use the one with the metal clips, but I am not sure as to what these look like. For the Western Digital drives, if you just bought the OEM version like me, you need to plug in the SATA power connection from your Power supply or use the power connection cables that come with your motherboard to your hard drive. It will be the far left slot. Then attach the SATA system cable to the next slot over from the power slot. Then plug the end of the cable to your motherboard SATA slot and your done. That is it. Good luck!

Yes, that is a SATA 2 3.0Gb/s Drive, your motherboard has 8x SATA w/ 4 of those being SATA 2 3.0Gb/s. I would recommend looking at the manual as that will tell you which cables are SATA2 and which are SATA1, and it will also help your color situation.

Thanks both of you, I am going to try this tonight.

edit: can i use the molex connector if I want? or must I use the SATA power connector?

You can use either 4-Pin Legacy Molex or SATA Power, it recommends not to use both at once, but I have done so to test it and the drive still works after extensive use, but just use 1.
