I feel like all Americans should be forming militias and actually occupying the government at this point. They need to be thrown out and charged with treason, and have a public display made of them, like they did with Saddam Hussein. How much oppression will it take?

This what you call "democracy"? People telling the politicians that THEY DO NOT WANT THIS and politicians wanting to do this nevertheless?

Screw that. Democracy is supposed to be based on the opinions/votes of the people. People voted a clear NO on this $h!t. What's there to discuss, huh?!

I have already voted against it time ago. Don't like it.

But about this statement:
"That’s just here on Tom’s. The effect on sites like YouTube, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Reddit and the rest of the internet would be devastating, and progress and innovation would grind to a halt under the cumbersome new restrictions."

There is no Progress nor Innovation at any of the above-mentioned sites.

SOPA, another example that money can buy ANYTHING from American politicians.

In 3rd world countries we call it corruption; in the USA we call it lobbying.

It's kinda like renaming the "War Department" to the "Department of Defense"; just semantics.

Sorry to pop the party but, while everyone was/is looking towards SOPA, they slipped (and approved) by everyone's backs the NDAA act, effectively bringing US one step closer to a fascist police state.

Not saying that SOPA is not important, just bringing to your attention how the powers that be (in favor of private interests, not the people) work.

BTW, what would happen if a Government website is posting a copyrighted photo by accident, or a politician's speech with music in the background from some party etc.
Can we than shut down the DOD website ? 🙂

Actually, we could stop ALL public speeches of our politicians. We just show up with a boom box and provide unlicensed background music ;-)

We need to stop voting the same nitwits into office that have been there for decades...It's really sad how a bill like this is so close to becoming law while something that would actually benefit our country will never see the light of day, TERM LIMITS!!

What better way to take attention away from mass unemployment and government debt than to appease Hollywood millionaires and piss off the rest of the population? They think that this will help their 9% approval rate? How ignorant...

Piracy have been a problem for media companies for 10 to 15 years now, the companies have tried the same cause of action for all these years, if their goal have been to reduce or stop piracy the campaign have been a miserable failure. I do not believe that piracy can be stopped, the only thing that will be effective is to educate people what they lose by pirating things, if people do see the downsides i do think that piracy over the Internet will be reduced. Piracy have many causes i list a few here:
1: People try to save money, its cheaper to download pirated things off the internet. That people in the media business are seen as incredible greedy aggravate this problem, the actions the media companies use now confirms this picture and make matters even worse.
2: The legal access to music/ films over the internet is/have been very poor, so to get easier access people download pirated things. The response from the media industry have been to limit on line access because fear that it will increase piracy.
3: The group that im in, i am basically against piracy but the actions the media industry have taken against normal people have made me angry at them, and now i dont really care if people download pirated stuff anymore.

SOPA will not stop piracy, if this line of action is continued we will just see that every thing that people post on the net will be encrypted and pirates takes stronger measures to avoid detection by police and the media industry. This may be a good thing for some, but the risk that terrorists and other really bad people take advantage of such tools will increase, so please just try to control everyone, i dont think you succeed.

Solution, if/when this is passed, go to every company that wanted this that has a site to allow users to post (most have a forum) and constantly post copyright work of other companies there

and welcome to an in house DNS server coupled with browser extensions

and lastly, this will not stop piracy in the slightest

I know that most of your politicians (in the US) are a little backwards relative to the rest of the public servants in the rest of the developed World, but I can assure you that if there's enough public interest in a subject, your elected officials will side with the public. Here in Canada a massive public outcry against Usage Based Billing got enough ears in the House of Commons to actually let the idea die in its tracks. Everybody who values their right to information should be very *very* interested in this issue, and you need to get off your behinds and let your senators (or what ever you americans have these days) know that you value your rights and your freedoms.

Thanks Tom's! I'm so lazy, this is what it took. Really.

Now my Congress members know. Even added a little jab at the end of the boiler plate text.

This is one of the reasons I support Anonymous, given some things they do make people glare at them, but they recently discovered one of the senate's members is getting paid 240k+ to support SOPA from a outside source.

No, they will not side with the public. They will appear to side with the public, and then push the legislation through under another name at another time. It slows them down a tad, it doesn't stop them. They can append it to another bill, which can be completely unrelated. We have lost so much of our freedom already.

All the best to Tom's and the people of the US. Hope you guys survive this.

i kind of think that other countries will follow suit. They're getting stupid in India too, asked social networking sites to take down offensive comments about politicians, and want them to filter it.

Passing of such a law in america is bad for all of us sadly. Go people, the Net started from the US, you should preserve it.

Viva la Internet!
