Self assigned IP issues

Hello everyone, hope all are well. For the last day I’ve been pulling my hair out with this issue I’ve been having on my MacBook and I’m assuming iPhone. My work laptop (windows) has been working perfectly fine, however no matter what method I try online nothing works (at least permanently)

I’ve tried:
Setting new location
Deleting Wi-Fi from network preferences as well as deleting preferences.plist etc
Resetting Network settings
Renew DHCP lease etc
And many more. The most success I get is that sometimes doing these allows me to connect for a few minutes, but very quickly will I run into the same issue.

I’m at my wits end over this, any suggestions?

use your windows pc to connect to the router and setup give the mac an ip address
I’ve tried this, used the ip that my laptop has picked up to try and connect. However while it works for a minute or two, the connection seems to fail (even though it says I’m still connected). Sadly I can’t change any router options or anything as I’m in between apartments and currently in a hotel.

169.254.64.164 is the ip it keeps choosing
That is a self-assigned IP address that does not allow communication with the actual internet. Obviously the network is having issues assigning IP addresses from the DHCP range or it’s intentional. See this thread for an explanation of why you got a 169.x.x.x addresses.

At a hotel, they’re most likely going to make you login to something on a website or pay for internet. Regardless of whether it’s a misconfiguration or intentional, you need to contact the network owner.

Even better, avoid hotel WiFi altogether unless you have a VPN. See this article for why I say that.

Edit: If you decide to get a VPN, Cyberghost and NordVPN are both pretty sweet.
