Just thought I'd point this out:

If you go on the CyberPower site and configure a Viper just like this and set the GPU to a 1GB GTX 460 (I don't know if the one in this contest is 1GB or 768 MB), the price shows up as $1337! Such a funny coincidence...or is it a coincidence at all?

[citation][nom]queequeeg[/nom]I think we're nearing the end. The frequency of comments is dropping off precipitously. Closing comments, then, may be in order.I have found this contest both brilliant and torturous. Brilliant in forcing us, the audience, to write for the prize. Torturous, in that writing is not what most of us, myself included, do. I've found myself trying to gently carry a metaphor through a comment where I thought it would best suit the message, searching for that perfect bon mot, and trying to communicate more precisely. If brevity is the soul of wit, there are unsung hours of labor that go into delivering it. The composition of a simple answer can be far from simple. I don't know that I will be commenting more, but I know putting the prize on the line has me being more thoughtful about my comments. Finally, good luck to everyone.[/citation]
I concur. The contest link isn't even on the front page of links anymore and very few people are coming back to add more comments.

I might comment a bit more if there's any new comments to respond to which I might have something witty (or helpful) to say about, but as there's only a handful of comments being added, I don't think there will be much more to say. This competition has been quite enjoyable and I'm very glad that Tom's thought of such a great way to get people to join the community and get more involved.

I think I'll post a final comment sometime tomorrow night. Good luck everyone! :)

[citation][nom]wildfox[/nom]Something to think about: am I the only one who's missing the SSD drive? Why isn't it common in high-end machines even today? The performance gain is so obvious.. If I win the first thing would be to add an SSD as system drive. Otherwise I'd be standing there with a real powerplant that loads slower than a crappy old sys (with SSD).[/citation]

I wouldn't per say get rid of it, what you can do is maybe add the SSD and make it your primary partition and make the other drive a slave drive. Booting up would be extremely fast but you would still have enough secondary storage for other stuff.

[citation][nom]Krytons_Last_Son[/nom]Wife controls my 40" television connecting my PS3, kids control the 32" connecting the 360s, and my laptop can't play anything other than youtube videos! looking forward to playing some great games on a PC with great graphics & new cpu. The only thing needed to finish the fantasy off would be if the Gaming setup included a 30" lcd and 5.1 gaming headset along with a copy of Crysis, since I've never been able to play it! Last PC game I could play on my laptop was KOTOR. Hell couldn't even finish FFXIII because it kept freezing on the PS3 and I won't bother discussing the amount of lag and glitching when attempting to play MW2 on either of my consoles!!! Please Toms, forget smart and witty, this is down right pleeding and begging![/citation]

Toms should give the married people here the extra points. 40 inch TV eh? That should have some picture in picture capability and you can always take control of that small 7x7 inch of screen in the tv for your pleasure. Lol. Thats what me and wife does. She watches her show on our 32" screen and i take that little corner in the screen to play my ps3. Maybe you are having bandwidth issues that doesn't allow you play online games and youtube. There are software out there where you can control how much bandwidth your house use and you can make your machine the primary. There's alot of articles about that.

[citation][nom]processthis[/nom]Are you asking how SLI works? If so:In SLI, the GPUs render every other frame back and forth. It doesn't usually quite double the FPS, but gives a good extra 70% performance usually, maybe even better with the GTX 460s as I hear they have good scaling. You don't have to use the same brand, but there are limits on how different they can be. I think they have to have the same amount of memory, but different clock rates should be fine. I know with Crossfire (ATI's dual GPU system), you can use different models that are similar enough in family, but it'll lower the performance of the better card to match the other one. I'm not sure if SLI has anything like that, but it wouldn't be a big deal because people almost always get two of the same card for SLI and Crossfire. There's no reason to mismatch on purpose that I can see. That is what you were asking about, right?[/citation]

Thanks Processthis...I'm trying to keep up with the technology nowadays since the last time i built a system but once you start playing WOW...you tend to forget everything in life..lol. I just remember back in the days when 4x AGP was awesome. It sounds like though that you got to put some serious dough in creating a triple video card system.

Quite a few people do this with their high end systems these days. SSDs are still pretty expensive though (not to mention improving a lot) so most people would rather put the extra money into the graphics card(s) and other things. Sure, you wait a bit longer here or there, but after the loading, games run better. Now, if we're talking a multi-thousand dollar computer, it's a no-brainer to go with SSD. At under $1400, it's not an easy choice, in my opinion.

BTW, SSDs don't only help with booting up. The entire OS runs much snappier with an SSD. I hear it's really nice. Unfortunately, I don't think any brick and mortar stores have computers with SSDs on display, so I have yet to try one out.

Well, Tom,

You finally got me ;P I have been coming to your forum for MANY-o-years for help and advice when I have been building my machines.. I look towards the guides and primariliy the reviews to find what components I want to get into my machines.. (don't recall ever seeing or signing up yet) so, finally got me to sign up 😉

The site is great and this is a fantastic giveaway. I have definitely been into hardcore gaming and that is where my machines have been built around.. It has been a couple years since my last one and I am due an upgrade and this would be perfect. Specially to help out the kid.

Great site once again and keep up the great reviews.

I've never actually built a system, let alone owned a true gaming PC, but in recent months I've been reading a lot about computers. I know like twenty times as much about computers than I did a number of months ago...XD Tom's Hardware is a lot of help and very informative.

I plan on building my own custom gaming computer someday. Which would, of course, be quite a ways off if I happen to win this as I wouldn't need a new one in a long time, haha. That Viper system is pretty sweet. :)

Building a gaming system can be a headache. You'll find yourself going back and forth to the store swapping components out because they could or couldn't be compatible with the other components you current bought. Other reason, i've went back to the store at least 5 times to swap out the video card because i wasn't satisfied with the results.

Two advantages you could consider when buying it from a website that builds gaming systems.

1. Save the headache
2. It's cheaper

Very cool kind of contest if you ask me. Thanks Toms Hardware if I win or lose... and as a side note, thanks for putting up all of your articles and such, I do not see a place where we can thank you so, i am thanking you here.

I think if I won it I would call the computer "Hurricane Tom" and have it etched on the side in honor of the site and the name of the case. That thing is a beast! I would absolutely run it 24/7 Folding at home.
Now for something smart and witty:
Ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny-thats science's reason why everything tastes like chicken.

Well, the contest ends in a few hours and I don't think anyone else is going to comment so I'm probably the last one. It was a great idea to hold this kind of contest, Tom's, and a lot of people signed up and started to participate, etc. Plenty of people have already said how cool it is so I won't go on about it...XD

It's been a lot of fun. Good luck to everyone!
