I can make the region and smooth it all out, blah blah blah. What I CAN'T
figure out is how to make a small city! I know it should be 64 x 64 or
less, but short of counting all those little grids, how do I do it????

I'm assuming you want to make a neighbourhood for Sims2 in Sim City4, go
into SC4, pick one of the smallest regions, (bear with me here it's been
awhile since I've done it), zoom in and level off the area, you can make
small hills *but* bearing in mind Sims2 uses only the middle of the map
you have to make a "square" in the middle of the smallest region, then
put some roads in about three grids apart,(only the default SC4 roads,
no expansion pack stuff), you'll have to practice getting it "just
right" I usually don't make mountains, hills, valleys, rivers etc, as
they take a long time to load in Sims2, (but that's just me), when
you've finished name your map save, then exit SC4 find your map copy and
paste it into C:\ My Documents\EA Games\Sims2\SC4 Terrains, and next
time you load Sims2 you should have your custom built 'hood, there's a
way to make a pic for it too but I forget. HTH

Sounds confusing, but I think I can do it (I hope!). My son installed SC4
and then moved out and didn't take it with him. I've messed around with it
a little but don't really know anything about it. Thanks.

It is confusing and it is also a pain in the neck when you first start.
Getting your SC4 map to be the centre of the Sim screen is the worst. A lot
of flipping between programs is required.

One hint I discovered the hard way. Making a SC4 map with just the terrain
editor results in big changes. often difficult to control. If you start the
city as a mayor and do a bit of terrain tweaking in that mode, before you
build the roads, you can make far more realistic maps.

This is someone writing who sweated over about four hand-made maps and lost
them all except for Cape Windy, and doesn;t intend to go back an do them all
again.
How the heck Maxis managed, I do not know - but wish I did. 8(

Any one else who has a few tips, please let us know.

Granny.

I wrote a short tutorial on making terrains for Sims 2 in SC4 - it's pretty
basic but if you email me, I'll send it on to you. The main thing to
remember is don't do anything too fancy, the transfer process is pretty
crude.

Best wishes
Maxon

Yup. I think it was your tutorial helped to get me started. 8)))

I have to admit, I prefer flat because of the way the pan and zoom tilts and
lurches over terrain bumps. It took me ages to get a real cape with the sea
on three sides. 8( And even then I included a rising cliff edge on one side
and wish I hadn't.
Must go back to SC4 and bash it with a hammer. I am sure I saved it at a SC4
file. I hope.

I've posted one of my custom built 'hoods over in the binaries for you
Thip,(and anyone else who want's it), there's room on the map for quite
a lot of houses.🙂 I play this one a lot.

I'd love to have it, but I use a free news service--no binaries. :-( Is
there anywhere else it can be posted?

I've uploaded it to our Yahoo group,
http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/simsnewsgroup/files/
you may have to join if you haven't already, it's a great place to share
things when people can't get to the binaries. click on 'files' and it's
called "City -Leaping Bear Rapids zip",(I know, but I was stuck for a name).
PS it hasn't appeared in the binaries yet-----------

Yay, thanks! I don't mind joining. 🙂 I just joined Maxon's group too.
Fun!
