im looking at upgrading my current system. A 2400+XP @ 2266 on a K7S5A with 1 Gig of 2100 value ram and a ti4200..... ya im cheep:) I mainly encode/rip dvds, so some video editing, 3d animations and canvas work. i play games a bit too. I was thinkin of getting a dual mp board with the 760MP/MPX chipset and thoughtin in another 2400+. or would i be better off geting a faster XP chip and better mother board with better ram? i would like to keep it as cheep as possable.
THankz for ur help

Well, dual doesn't = cheap.

Don't think of dual = raw speed, think of dual = multitasking. If you want to do more then one thing at once (ie: 3D animation while you rip DVDs) then dual is for you. If you're content with sitting back and drinking coffee while your DVD is transcoding or your scene is rendering then skip the dually.

A dually is like SCSI - it's hard to explain it to someone else but once you've used it you'll never go back.

*Dual PIII-800 @900 i440BX and Tualeron 1.2 @1.7 i815*

Sorry dude, nothing beats a P4 for what you want to do except a nice A64. Ebay the XP stuff and look to the future!

If you want to go dual with what you have cheaply, you could get an MP dually board and aonterh XP 2400+, but you'd also have to bridge some of the bridges (I think the L1's) to turn the XP's into MP's, it's not easy to do right.

They're talking about dual CPUs, not dual channel memory.

bridging the L1's on any XP makes it an MP?

How much money you have to burn? If you mostly do Video encoding and 3d animation, you might be better served with an Intel based system.

You'll want to double check to make sure L1's are the right bridge set, but yes, AMD breaks SMP on the XP by cutting a set of bridges, uncut those processors are MPs.
